How to make Doran's Shield a bit more...useful.

Small changes which I feel would bring Doran's Shield a bit more...up to par with the rest of the Doran items.

Currently +80 HP +6/5sec HP regen -8 Damage from Single Target Spells

Gold Efficiency: 430 Item Cost: 440

As it currently stands, Doran's Shield is the least gold efficient item out of all of the Doran items. In terms of popularity, it's also ranked dead last of them boasting a horrendous 2.5% purchase rate. To compare, Doran's Ring is in the 15% area while Doran's Blade is around 20%. Each of the Doran items also has it's optimal usage. Doran's Blade is essential for ADCs starting in the bottom lane. Doran's Ring provides everything needed more mid laners. One optimal alternative for Doran's Ring would be a Flask+potions. That provides a less aggressive but a more sustaining approach. Optimal depending on the matchup. Manaless mid laners such as Akali? Boots+4 provide sustain or even Regen Bead+potions.

What's a situation where someone would build a Doran's Shield? I've seen it built in the past for bot lane supports going into a poke heavy lane but Relic Shield is a much more optimal approach considering it can be upgraded, allows sustain for not only yourself but your other bot laner, and provides more HP.

I'd assume Riot would prefer Doran's Shield to be a more tankier approach ala top lane.

Now let's look at some situations where Doran's Shield would be beneficial?

You're going against an auto attacking ranged top laner: I can see why you believe Doran's Shield would be good here. The -8 AA would be helpful. But you'll only have 1 HP potion going into lane. Why choose this over Cloth+5? Cloth+5 provides more sustain, can build into other things more useful and is an overall more cost-efficient approach.

You're going against a mage? That -8 reduction on single target spell damage is helpful, yes. But again, you're going into lane with only 1 potion. Why this approach over say flask+3? You're manaless? Boots+4 works. Also helps against ganks. Enemy lacks skillshots and is point and click? Ruby+2. (Very underrated start here.) Manaless and trying to play safe? Regen+Potions.

Again, there's no clear cut situation where Doran's Shield is the "This item is definitely needed." (Unless you're Vladimir going against a Swain. Doran's Shield is pretty helpful in this one case. but even then, I don't know if it's the most optimal.)

As it stands, Doran's Blade is the only self scaling Doran's item because of it's 3% vamp. You can also stack these giving additional vamp, additional HP and additional damage while still being very cost effective. Doran's Ring provides mana sustain in lane while also giving damage. But the thing is, you can stack Doran's Rings! Again, applying additional damage, additional HP and additional sustain!

That -8 single target spell damage is helpful early on but as the game goes on, it's value goes down. Why is this useful? You have even else incentive to go this approach considering if you're behind, this doesn't help you at all. What I suggest is the following:

  1. Remove the UNIQUE passive. Allow it to "Scale" with the other Doran items. Let it be an actual TANK item with a purpose. I know what many people are saying at this point:

"What if someone stacks them?" You mean like every other Doran item? "But -48 single target damage is broken good!" Yes, it is extremely good. It provides 480 HP, 36/5sec regen and -48 single target damage reduction. it sounds incredibly good! But take this into account, that's extremely slot inefficient. So while it seems good in the short run, it's really not considering you can't build Doran's Shield into anything and it only prolongs your first advanced item.

  1. Add +3 Armor/+3 Magic Resistance to it. Allow it to be an optimal start against top magic lane users because, as it stands, there are no early magic variations to cloth armor. This would provide one hybrid alternative.

  2. Cut HP/Regen from 6/5sec to 5/5 sec.

Let's see the math in regards to cost effectiveness with the new shield.

+80 HP = 214 gold. +3 Armor = 60 Gold. +3 Magic Resistance = +60 Gold. +5/5 sec = 180 gold.

Total Gold Value: 514 gold which would make it 117% gold efficient before including the passive. That's still less than Doran's RIng AND Doran's Blade but it's still a huge upgrade toward what it is now.

That's my current problem with item 1054 : the lack of sustain.

I face AD top? I will take item 1029 + 5 item 2003.

I face AP top? I will take item 2041 + 3 item 2003.

The stats and passive just does not cut it when you lose this big of a regen during laning...

But what if I don't use mana =[

then boots+4 pots?

reju beads+pots

This is the best alternative, but still not as much regen as the above ^ xD

actually small question when buying flask and 3 pots why do u guys always use the pots first instead of flasks?

Myozthirirn1 votes

Pots heal 50% faster / Sometimes you dont need the mana(yet) Otherwise always flask first

dr lichdeath1 votes

its jjust cuz i always see enemy ekkos use the pots first even if their mana is half empty

I like this idea.

Or they could just be really lazy and reduce the price so that you can take more than 1 pot with it. Whatever works.

I think riot doesn't like the item because it promoted really passive laning back when it was strong.

Hello I am Bird4 votes

What's wrong with passive laning? It means bigger numbers during teamfights and overall, creates longer games promoting more play.

Riot has historically disliked when the game was very passive in the laning phase, and has consistently made changes to promote more aggression. The gutting of old Eve was one. The conistent nerfing of shaco is another. The introduction of trinkets which give free vision was yet another. Limiting potions to 5 only was another change. Passive laning patterns create a very boring spectator sport as well as driving early game champions out of the meta, since taking risks and playing to get ahead is either too risky or too hard.

Hello I am Bird1 votes

So basically... "Hey, early game champs are doing horrible!" "Let's gut other champs so said early game champs can stay viable"

Slamurai Jack2 votes

It's more like champions with a weak early game were getting a free pass since sustain was so good. With the pre-nerfed Dorans shield and the OP defensive masteries, Nasus was a near immovable brick in top lane from the start of the game, and weak early adcs were also fine because Lifesteal quints were so good.

Vistha Kai1 votes

Nasus is still pretty much an immovable brick without a jungler's help.

no he's not lol

Vistha Kai1 votes

Then he never was.

Aych Pii2 votes

Fun fact: when a early game defensive itemization is nerfed, champions that need early game defensive stats suffer.

Vistha Kai1 votes

When I've seen Nasus two seasons ago and last season he was like "Meh, 300 stacks at 20". Now he's at least "500 at 20. BOW BEFORE ME, MORTALS" every single game, countered or not.

Aych Pii1 votes

That's just you encountering better Nasus players.

Vistha Kai1 votes

Or people getting rusty in playing aganist Nasus.

Aych Pii1 votes

That could also be a factor.

If laning becomse so safe for everyone then there is almost no point in picking Renekton instead of Jax Nasus Irelia Vladimir. Do you really want Vlad and Nasus to be even safer, so they can get to late game even easier? Not to mention that you will see them every damn game.

Ekko requires thoughtful plays or you just kinda die. He's way less mechanically intensive than other assassins and is rewarded for clever skill usage instead, it's great.

makes the first couple minutes of the game wet noodle fights LOL

Stompburger1 votes

That and if it's too good supports will take it, and bot lane will get warped around whoever can use Doran's Shield best.

EgotisticTURTLE7 votes

I would like to see the Dorans Items lowered so we can at LEAST take 2 pots.item 1054

D1rtFarmer2 votes

it used to be 400 even.. they just had to cut it out to make games longer shorter.. same with the blade.

Sozan55 votes

Or they could istead go with easier way.

Doran's Shield Cost reduced from 440 -> 400. Now you get 2 potions start and the item becomes 107,5% cost efficient not including the passive.

TotalJerk3 votes

Actually, the passive has a widely varying gold efficiency depending on what your opposing laner is bringing to the table.

Against champions that do a little damage very often, it shuts them down. Against champions that down lots of damage in bursts, it's worthless.

As pointed out in the previous post, the pros of buying it do not outweigh the cons. There's little to no reason to build it over other alternatives.

TotalJerk2 votes

They very much DO outweigh the cons if you're against the right laner, it's borderline OP against them.

Care to give an example?

And Jayce, for the record, isn't one despite his constant poke with AA. Cloth would be more beneficial. Teemo? A flask+pots would be a huge help. Regen+Pots would also help the manaless sustain. In fact, Teemo might be the only champion it's relatively decent against and even then, it's not "I need to get it."

Doran's Shield is good against constant all in trades. A tryndemere with ignite might all in you, You may in desperation pop all your red potions to make it out alive. He sees this and backs off. You just wasted your potions and the trade was worthless. Ten seconds he goes in for another trader, you only have cloth armour. He backs off and does this ten seconds later. You will be worn down. Where as with Doran's shield You'll probably be consistently winning trades against him.

Vistha Kai1 votes

But will you? Shield leaves you with only one pot left. Cloth leaves you with 5.

StealWolverine1 votes

shield always has hp/5 after you use those pots you have 0 sustain

Champion Skin1 votes

Even champions who do little damage often will do more damage rather quickly (and keep in mind that DoT's and such are not blocked/reduced by doran's shield) And keep in mind that it doesn't scale with resistances at all so the more damage your opponent get the worse it will become (it even get worse if they don't build damage as they will get higher AD from levels and higher base damages and such)

UPfreely2 votes

what if they reduced the cost to like 350-400g?

Oliver Trist1 votes

OP you're post is on point. ADCs get to skip over vamp scepter because they get lifesteal from dorans blade which in turns allows them to rush their op infinity edge right from the go. A mage who gets two dorans rings gets at least 50 mana back from killing an entire minion wave. Thats not even including the passive mana regen they get per second from both rings, on most champions that's a free spell. SO yea I think dorans ring is in a very good place. I think that dorans blade shouldn't give lifesteal and should be reverted back to getting X health per auto that way ADCs aren't getting Infinity edge right away and Doran's shield needs to be significantly buffed as well since i can't think of any situation that its useful, not even in any niche situations. You know that guardian's horn item on the Aram map that has the active? They should make a cheaper version of that with an active and call it Dorans shield. Not sure what the numbers would be but i think it would make dorans shield viable again.

Champion Skin1 votes

That sounds like a rather bad idea to randomly make Doran's shield into an item which you can use to run down your enemy or to run away with (and I am assuming the 25 armor and MR would be removed from the active effect)

Silents4291 votes

Er, Last time this got brought up a good point made was how well the item scaled with the tank masteries early on, and that tank users just had other options while the same can't be said for Mages and ADC's.

It does it's suppose to well, just not in a favorable meta since most top laners it doesn't counter.

Champion Skin1 votes

What in the world are you talking about?

It doesn't really scale well with anything.... as it doesn't really get better with resistances as the damage block is before armor/MR The thing that makes it work best is low and repeated single target damage.... which is most common in the early game since most things start hitting more and more as the game goes on and even in the early game things usually deal at least somewhat decent damage

And doran's blade actually do scale with ADC masteries/runes as the extra AD/AS gives them more HP from the lifesteal

And Doran's ring doesn't really scale much with mage masteries or runes other then giving them more mana to use/abuse the extra AP/damage they have

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Good ideas here. In my opinion, it should ABSOLUTELY beat out boots pots for tanky champs. If they aren't buying it, it's a big hint that it's undertuned.

Shrek Luigi1 votes

I buy Dshield on my first B as support Leona, usually with a cloth, a few wards and a rejuvination bead if I can. Dshield, with the flat damage reduction masteries in the defensive tree, is a great early item if you're packing enough armor in your runes/masteries to reduce damage from AA's before the flat damage reduction kicks in.

It would probably be a more relevant start item if it gave a bit of armor.

Amusingly against top lane lulu her passive counts as multiple procs of single target damage so Doran's shield basically makes her auto harass worthless.

Alternatively, have it uniquely increase your base HP regen by a flat number so it scales with % increases too. That 6/5 is looking pretty juicy when boosted 200%
