[Champion Discussion] Orianna: Q or E Start?

Hey Everyone,

Wanted to start a discussion about Orianna, namely whether to start Q or E. I know you don't want to level a skill first before you need it, but all things equal (no level 1 shenanigans), you will usually start Q or E. Wanted to get y'alls feedback on this; I will outline what I see to be the reasoning behind each decision.

#Q Start: The traditional start for Orianna, it allows her to create that zone pressure level 1 that is so characteristic of Orianna. Q is also the skill you max first, under most circumstances, so it makes sense to start Q (get a head start on maxing it). There is also the thought that you don't need your other spells first, W has very, very limited use without Q, and you typically have pots to sustain early so the shield and extra resistances aren't vital.

#E Start: This is the one I'm more interested in. E start gives you a shield and resistances, which allows you to play more aggressive in lane level 1; you can zone your opponent off minions early when you have little pressure of a gank (since the jungler usually doesn't gank till level 3 at the earliest). Your autos do a ton of damage (2 autos are probably equal to or greater than a level 1 Q, provided you don't hit anything else with your Q), and you can safely trade damage because you have that shield, resistances, and pots in case you get behind. The problem is your only ranged capacity comes from autos, where Orianna has pretty average auto attack range.

I personally feel like E start is better in most cases, especially against champions with lower or equal range; vs long range mages it's sort of mixed, you can still start E to mitigate level 1 harass, but Q start helps you zone and trade better, which might be more worthwhile. What do you guys think?

In all honesty, it depends on who I am laning against. For champs with further range....I am looking at you Zyra, with your f-king 1100 range snare... I typically take E because it takes some of the pressure off when i screw up and fail to dodge. Against shorter range champs(e.g. Veigar, Kat, etc) I tend to take q because I can bully them hard. I am a VERY aggressive person in lane phase. Between Q AND my autoattacks, I can pretty much keep them underleveled and underfarmed. Also on a semi-related note, I prefer triple magic pen runes to start and rushing Tear of the Goddess. This seems to work for me, but I think only because the triple magic pen give flat 20 magic pen at level one... much more effecient(imo) than straight ap.

interesting...so I'm assuming you go chalice into athenes after tear? then finish archangels? Thanks for your help!

In higher levels of play, Tear is not taken on Orianna because it takes too long to charge up. In addition, Athene's is probably the most important item for a mage to have. Even AP assassins such as LeBlanc rush it competitively. My advice is to ignore the Tear and go straight for Grail ASAP.

Right, I was just asking about his build

Q doesnt really help you zone early, the main advantage to starting q is to use it as a mobile ward at level 1, but in lane e is vastly superior for trading early

Also you dont have to max q first, it should be your first or second skill but I generally max w first since its more mana efficient for damage in lane and its great for waveclear. If you do that though you need to make your q's count you cant just miss them all the time like a q max

Interesting, I had thought you could put your Q out to try to push the laner away from certain parts of the lane, but I guess not? Isn't this how you're supposed to use Q later in lane? I'm still new to Orianna, lol

You do use q that way, but at level 1 it doesnt do much damage and it has a longer cd than at later levels so they dont really have to respect it early on.

That's a good point, thank you!

oriana is too squishy if you will take q you will probably get both outranged and outpoked
e makes it easier for you to get lvl 2 and 3 safely

I mean q first is fine in certain lanes, but imo e is still always better since you can just e yourself and auto the enemy twice without taking the creep damage or some of their retaliation damage because of e, the 10 armor is deceptively strong as well early on.

On a related note, you still take 21-0-9 masteries on Orianna? I remember Bjergsen was one of the few mid laners I've seen who used to take 21-9-0 on pretty much all his midlaners, but looking at his probuilds lately, he seems to have changed up to 21-0-9

dude it always depends, but when you count the lanes that she would want to take q and the lanes that she would want to take e there will be much more lanes that will make her take e mainly because ap carries are made for ranged fight

I start with Q when solo laning, and E when playing Oriana support. In both cases I max E first, since it's more mana efficient for the damage (send it out, then position yourself so it'll hit the maximum possible minions on its way back to you).
