Ranked?

So since I'm level 33, and I know how to play pretty well now. Why did I get iron 4? My friend who was playing with me is gold and when he placed on his smurf he got iron 4 as well? Why is that, and do I stick to iron after the 8 games placements?

It's bugged right now and not intended. There's more information in this post: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/1fGaKtqV-quick-gameplay-thoughts-december-12

Here are the relevant bits:

{quoted} Working on some ranked irregularities before season starts

We've been seeing a few issues with where some accounts are placed in the new ranked system. More details on that and how we're addressing it to come soon. TLDR for now though is:

  • We want to put genuinely new accounts into Iron because it's a better experience both for those new players and others who previously got matched with them in what ended up being really uneven games
  • Smurfs are currently getting put into Iron but then not climbing really rapidly as intended, so their MMR and rank get desynched pretty badly at times
  • _ Returning players should be placed based on their MMR, but are currently getting put into Iron sometimes._
  • We're working on a bunch of fixes for the above, plus some other polish, at present.

2 Things : Theory : Riot is still testing their ranked system because even high elo players have played their smurfs and gotten Iron 4, it's somehow very common. Don't worry about it too much. Normally you only get your ranked placement when you do ALL of your 10 ranked games, so I think this is, again, testing their system on a wider range of people.

It's currently preseason so your rank will get reset when it begins in Jan/Feb (I don't know off the top of my head). Whether or not that will place you back into Iron 4, that's beyond me. I will say though, in my experience with Smurfing (As unpopular is it is), the system will initially base the hidden MMR starting point off the Normal Games that is then carried into Ranked Games when I decided to do my placements and get placed in mid elo rather than start from the bottom.

If you're interested in climbing, you should really try playing Ivern. He's not played very often and so a lot of people don't know how to play against him, and he's really strong. There are a lot of sayings about how wood is strong such as "strong like an oak", and people wouldn't say things like that if there isn't some truth to them. Ivern is a tree btw.

I know who Ivern is, and I respect all your replies. Good luck on the rift brothers, and I appreciate the feedback! I will take it all into consideration and read what the link is that someone posted.
