Mastery 5 new Taric player here.

In short, nothing happened to him.

He just emphasizes more coordination and teamwork than most people experience in solo queue. He is very strong though.

He just requires a certain... Finesse.

Not I, but a friend of mine always goes him when he supports and carries in a sense. He is really strong and is used in some of the Korean teams.

I'm still trying to learn him, even finished a specialised rune page for him a few weeks back. It's that boring ult of his that puts me off in the end - and yes I know it's powerful, that doesn't make it any less dull and unsatisfying for me.

People don't play him because of mage supports mainly, because they mess him up.

It's a bit more complex than that. Some of the younger, more excitable players just aren't attracted to tanks - even on the top lane, let alone as support -- so you won't see him as much in lower tiers.

Also, I find that I can usually get away with playing Taric if and only if I have an ADC I know and trust. I've carried with Taric before - but if the ADC can't read the situation or is not willing to follow up, then you can find yourself left as a fairly ineffective support for a large chunk of the game. (Indeed, if I can looks like that might be the situation in champ select, and I see we need the tank/melee support, then I'll trot out Braum, Trundle, Alistar, Thresh, or Blitz, who can contribute to the team more easily when the adc can't find his carrypants.)

Lastly, if you have a tank on top lane, then quite often it is more advantageous to go with a support that offers some ranged possibilities on the bottom - just purely out of team balance. And with CoC in favour (until its inevitable toning back), a distance engage is going to be a required part of the support package for the next little while.

He's fine . It's just that the current state of the game tends to favour the ranged supports (not just the mage supports as some have suggested here, but supports that offer some sort of ranged poke). Also, generally, there has been a trend or pattern I have noticed in the game - if the top is going more tanky generally, then the supports go the opposite direction - and vice versa.

He's just too hard for most people to play now, and requires a bit of coordination (more than you'd see in most games). Can pick someone a lot easier who can do more with or without team coordination.
