I know they are BOTH great champs to play, but I want to spend more time on them to understand them and play them better, but I don't which one to play with. I can't just play Lux one game and then Ori another, I just want to play one champ for a while. Any ideas and recommendations?

I think Orianna is better because you can land that shield.
Although, she is harder to play
Lux is just a weird champion. She is 1 part control mage, 1 part burst combo mage, and 1 part support utility mage. While she does all these things somewhat well, she excels at nothing because she her kit lacks focus.
Orianna is a pure control mage with viable utility and damage. She won't bring a ton of damage to your late game, but she brings all the control and utility your team needs. Her laning phase is strong and she can cs well and get off poke. The downside is she is easy to gank but so is lux.
Orianna by far is the better champion to master. She's a safe pick has a little bit of everything. Utility though shields and speed ups/slow down, AoE damage, 1 shot potential on ADCs and enemy midlaner, and sustained damage through low cdr on her Q and her passive. She's a great blind pick and doesn't really have any counters, at best she has a few lanes that give her more trouble than others. She's useful ahead or behind as well. Lux is somewhat similar but more burst, range less utility and versatility and also worse when behind.
Ori is better in higher elo, but Imo Lux is more enjoyable to play. Probably better at lower elo than ori. She also she looks cooler. And she got a legendary and star guardian skin. Plus I hate ori, so. That's something to think about
Once mastered, I'd agree Orianna is the better champ. Personally I'd still go Lux though. In terms of reliability I feel Lux is far superior, especially in solo queue. Orianna is great in a team fight, where Lux can do great in a team fight, is less reliant on her team in said team fight, or can just pick off an enemy outside of team fights then making it easier for her team to take an objective or a 5 v 4 fight.
Lux provides more consistent and tea,wide utility while Orianna provides more DPS and fits better into AoE Comps. Lux is also a lot safer a champion since she has the better range, but Orianna also has the more powerful AoE burst. Lux has the better pick potential tho.
