Are new mmr's fair?

I'm currently trying to fight back into gold division after being dropped down to the bottom of silver because of poor placement games (3-7 so can't complain too much). I was in my last shot at getting back into gold when my mid gold average team gets matched up with all low plat players. If I wasn't fighting to get INTO gold I wouldn't have a problem with it, but the fact that I need to play slightly better than people ranked a full tier higher than what I would be just to get back in. I don't think this is particularly fair; sure it's a nice challenge and everything, but I don't think I should be going against plat players when I'm still in silver in order to get into gold. This argument is solely based off the results lolskill said about my game so I'm not certain that's what their current ranks were, but they definitely played a smarter than us and now I get to retry for promos.
