Hextech "Rental" Needs Clarification or Removal

LXII··179 votes·6,209 views

Title pretty much says it all. Got Dunkmaster out of my latest chest (only chest that has yielded a single thing I would want), and decided I would give it the old test run before I dismantle everything I have to get the 1500 essence to unlock it.

BOOM

GONE

NO MORE DUNKMASTER FOR ME

When people read "rental" I assume I'm test driving the item and will then get to decide if I want to use a ton of essence on it. But that's not the case and I'm beyond pissed about it. I would not have used this feature had it been clarified on. Is there any way to hit "undo" or something? Cause this is the least cool thing Riot has ever done to me personally.

Well, since the crafting it's been on for quite a while and A LOT of threads about it have been made (and also riot specified it would disappear) I think that, at this point, people who end up like this just deserve it. If you're not sure about something the internet is a great place, don't just assume something and pretend compensation when there are already tons of threads made about this and riot always stated they would disappear after the trial, I could understand when the system was fresh (first 2 weeks or so), but now it's all your fault, if you weren't sure about it you could've made a google search or searched directly on the boards about it, even asked again and someone would've told you that it would've expired.

Right, because everyone reads the forums.

Its on the original post introducing the "Hextech Crafting" on the league webpage... it was on the client too... and why would you use something without reading about it first.

Personally, I had taken a break from League and only came back later, so I didn't see anything specific about Hextech until after I logged in. After reading what the free skin shard did, I almost rented it out, too, and the only reason I didn't was because it seemed too generous for Riot to do so. So I had to ask a friend if it was safe to do so.

Simply put, it should be easy and simple to read from the shard's description itself that the shard will be consumed if used as a rental. It's not like it would be difficult to do so.
The fact that Riot doesn't make it clear on the shard's description itself is an actual problem, especially when you consider that newbies already have a hard time of adjusting to the game's system and ladder. I mean, do you actually expect a newbie to read past Riot logs to find out if this random shard they got from a weird chest is gonna go away if they want to try the skin out in a rental?

Perhaps clarification for people who don't browse the boards often, and take the word "Rental" at face value.

or maybe people should stop assuming shit and read up on the functions?

I hate people that feel that we need to cater to lowest common denominator. Stupidity and ignorance should be pushed. The op could of looked stuff up. Instead he went with what he wanted to believe.

Here is my edit

I love how not one person can not even come up with one decent response to my minimum standards idea. Everything has been a grammatical problem (attacking the person), typo (again attacking the person) and straight harassment (and once again attacking the person). I leave all the flaws of the post intact. For they are truly minor and if they are your biggest focus nothing can help you.

hell since you are so smart... i will even quote the from the first web page that comes up. i do not want to have to make you work and click 4 buttons.

from riots support page Activate a shard to “rent” a champion for 7 days. This does consume the shard, so you won't be able to use it again until you find another.

The system does have clarity, are you not aware how to google? Riot stance has been for YEARS that the client does not hold all the information and that you have to go out side of it and look shit up.

Those that have to brag about there supposed accomplishments as a defense, usually are very small minded.

You shouldn't have to google things like that, that's the whole point of this thread. Information should be given at the time of transaction. If a business is gonna charge you tax they tell you, they don't just tack it onto your order and hope you don't notice.

And it's not "bragging about accomplishments" when you make assumptions ahead of time. Had my post read "Listen here boys, I'm smart as fuck and this doesn't make sense even to me" you would have a case, but since you tried to insult my intelligence then got shut down it's an entirely different thing.

LostFr0st4 votes

Both of you, please let it rest. OP you have a valid point with the thread and Monster has a valid point that intelligence has nothing to do with the argument and that Riot made it clear on release elsewhere than in the client.

Next patch (likely this Wednesday) they are clarifying the rental option with brackets explaining that it consumes the shard.

Since when does rental turn into a chance to make it permanent?

My Waifu Vanilla6 votes

If I test drive a car I still have the option to get the car after the test drive.

If I rent and test drive a skin from crafting I no longer have the option to get said skin afterwards. Also, before you say "but you can spend RP instead", any skin I would even CONSIDER testing would've been a vaulted one such as the Zombie Brand sitting in my stash which I actually can NOT buy with RP until October (or maybe July depending on when Riot wants the Harrowing to be).

DrCyanide3 votes

If the option was called "test drive" you'd have a point.

But it's not, it's called "rent." Not even "rent to own," just "rent." I don't have the option to buy the apartment I'm in just because I happen to rent it now.

Maszii2 votes

Test drive and renting are two different things. You should see this as an appartment, you rent it for a year and after that year you gtfo. Same with the skin you get it for a week and then it gtfo your skin collection.

Freijords Might1 votes

But then you have an option to buy the apartment, or keep renting it. Bad analogy.

Maszii2 votes

No you dont, thats all based on the contract. Your contract states 1 year rent, so after a year the contract is over and you gtfo. If you and the landlord make another contract for the next year then you can keep renting it.

I dunno man. I was unaware of the rental ability before hextech crafting came out, upon noticing it I thought for a second and had assumed it would use the shard as I felt it was the only possibility that made sense to me.

I'm sorry you lost it this way but I felt it was the only thing that made sense with the rental ability.

Upon further thought (after) it doesn't make sense for a company like Riot to give test runs without screwing you, because where's the money in that? But the though process was something like this: Hmm.. will this take my shard? > Nah, that wouldn't make any sense, because if I like it I don't have a shard anymore so I can't even get it now through the loot. > Alright then, logic dictates that this should be fine. > Nope

Terchio6 votes

Clarity might help. I don't think they really tried to pull a fast one, but maybe thought instead that the optimal use of the system would be to:

A. Buy the skin if it's something desirable to you to that extent. B. Rent the skin if it's something you would like to see, but easily would get bored of (like a free chance at those transaction refunds people used to ask for all the time). C. Sell/crush the shard for the chance at edging you closer to a different champion skin.

Now, that said, the entire idea of "test driving" is still possible, but it really should have a charge (in essence still, no need to bring out real money). That way at least something of value is being used when you try to farm skin shards for a lengthy skin lineup. This also opens up a new choice in Hextech Crafting. Do you buy Sleigh Belle Katarina outright with Essence? Or do you instead rent with Essence every Christmas, when you actually want to play her? It's not an amazing concept, but it could use some mulling over.

Devo Hes1 votes

No, your logic is beyond fucked

think of it like this

Hmm, rent the skin? will this take my shard? probably but then if i like the skin ill just buy the skin whole in the shop, cause thats how the company makes money

You apparently hopped right over the first part of my statement where I said exactly what you just said. "Upon further thought (after) it doesn't make sense for a company like Riot to give test runs without screwing you, because where's the money in that?" Direct quote.

SanKakU1 votes

"...had assumed it would use the shard as I felt it was the only possibility that made sense to me." - Really? So the rental costing essence as a possibility never occurred to you?

To me, someone that made the mistake clearly doesn't look at details. There's no way I would have fallen for this as I would be wondering how much essence or whatever I would have to spend to rent it. The fact that the cost is the shard itself definitely makes me think it's not a rental. I'm no English master, but I had the same initial thought that this thing wouldn't cost itself if it were called a rental and I'm sure many people have had it.

The movies we watch don't tell us, "This movie will self-destruct in 5 seconds if you are not the true owner of the media it is written on." at the end of the show.

I guess the reason people are upset with it especially is the same reason I would be if I were in their position. You can't get a shard back after you've rented it. If you decided you really wanted it afterwards, you're basically screwed and have to buy it the old fashioned way, with RP. You missed your chance to get it through the loot system and are unlikely to get that chance again.

Now if they are upset because they can't get essence from it or to use it as another one of three for random stuff, then I can get on the bandwagon and ridicule them for their silly greed. You don't rent stuff for free. That's called borrowing. As it is, the most I can do is belittle them for not bothering to do the proper research, like going on YouTube and looking at skin previews.

Devo Hes1 votes

When ever did the rental cost essence?

i just looked in my hextech crafting and it states right there that it consumes the shard

so uh, are you high af or something?

SanKakU1 votes

Never. It's just that if you call it a rental, it makes sense for the 'money' that you use to be the cost. There are so many resources or types of money in this game, and essence is just another sort.

Not everyone likes to read. Some people like to assume stuff. I don't get what's so hard to understand about that.

Except it doesn't show that so...

LXII13 votes

If anything it should just be taken out with the way it currently works. There is literally no scenario where I would rather have it for 7 days instead of forever.

A Liberal9 votes

They should make the rental one time (one game) free, or a 7 day using IP. It shouldn't consume the shard.

Im sorry :(

Sukishoo13 votes

It's right in the name, so that's more or less on you. A Rental is something you get to try out and once it's period is over you return it, so in this case the shard is removed once you've chosen to do so.

So by that logic I would take said shard, try it out, then put it back where I found it after? Cause where I found it was in my inventory, not the abyss. It's not "right in the name" or this would be a non-issue and wouldn't have happened to (apparently) so many others. I can't even begin to understand why anybody would defend Riot's end on this. Would it have really been that hard to just say "this will consume the shard" on the prompt to rent? It was intended ambiguity in hopes that after my rental period I would just be like "well damn, I liked dunking so much that I guess I'll drop $20 on the skin that I just could have had for free".

Sukishoo11 votes

You're returning it to Riot as it was given from a chest, so it wasn't "Found in your inventory"

LXII5 votes

{quoted}

Except it literally was in my inventory.. A chest isn't a gift, we earn them or even buy them. Get your backwards logic, Riot fanboy self outta here with that.

Maszii3 votes

LOL plz, you might be in medschool, but maybe get out in the realworld some more.

Sukishoo3 votes

Yes, however what is inside the chest isn't always going to be 100% free content. The use of a shard as a Rental is in the same fashion that other mobas allow you to use their in-game currency (like IP) to try out the skins/champions. So once you've done that in those games, you don't get what you spent back after the trial is over, and thus this is the same thing but presented to you in a different fashion. You chose to use the shard as a rental, it takes that away, and if you actually want said content afterwards you buy it. People wanted the ability to rent things in-game before they bought them, and that's exactly what this is.

If they let you kept the shard after the rental, Riot would lose a lot more money because they'd be then giving the content away multiple times. So if you earn a chest, you can either choose to keep whats inside by using essence (if you have it), rent it (and give up the shard) or break it down. It's all very simple to understand.

Engetsu13 votes

Most games have the Rental system, and from all those games I never heard of "Item rented, has Expired it will now return to your Inventory". Most games when you rent an item, Mount or weapon, The Rental item will disappear from the inventory when the timer is up. So I don't know how this rental system would be any different from other game's rental system.

Its the same in real life, if you rent a ebook from Amazon, does that Book good back into your Virtual library or does it return to Amazon?
Answer: It is sent back to Amazon.

There's been videos, forum posts, and there is even a Hextech crafting Q&A in the support section ( https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/207884233-Hextech-Crafting-Guide )

Is there any way to hit "undo" or something? Cause this is the least cool thing Riot has ever done to me personally.

Riot really didn't do it to you, You did it to yourself in my opinion. Riot has that option there but doesn't force you to click it.
I would Understand if you clicked on the option to make it perm, but it gave you Rental instead. But that's not the case here......

If you are unsure about something, there nothing wrong asking about it or looking it up. Don't Assume something and than blame it on Riot/the company when it was own your mistake.

Woodakoodashooda11 votes

Rentals should just be removed altogether. I already guessed that if I rented something it would disappear. Also, if people can just "rent" and display the skin in game then doesn't that devalue earning said skin?

Cait main as support leo: Awesome headhunter skin, wish I had it. Cait player: Oh, I rarely play cait, got it as a rental from a chest and decided to try it out. Cait main: ...

You'd think you'd quickly check before doing something with it.

Riot was pretty clear on release that a rental would use it up. I'm not sure why it exists as an option (who would want to rent something?) but nonetheless I'm astonished at the number of people who have made this mistake.

I had a lingering thought that it may consume the shard, that being said I clicked the rental button and was looking for a "are you sure? This is kinda dumb and will take your shard" prompt. When I didn't get that I just went ahead with it.

Yeah, there's a little bit of user error here, but they should have all the information right there on the screen where your "transaction" is taking place.

Terchio3 votes

That warning would make a lot of sense... That should be implemented at the very least.

Mickey Donnerudo4 votes

Every other option also consumes the shard. Why would you think the rental would be different?

Maszii3 votes

Cus hes in medschool and his IQ is high af.

Terchio3 votes

Well, because one of them is buying the product, thereby nullifying the need of a shard, and the other option is precisely scrapping the shard for profit. Not like those options had any realistic alternatives. Meanwhile, Riot found a way to implement a trial period for an item they decided not to let you have once you get the trial. Now, there's some logic.

Bobloser35554 votes

If rental would not remove the skin shard it would cost something, otherwise everyone would make use of the rent option.

AnonymousPoro3 votes

I've lost three legendaries from the vague description of the rental option(Surprise Party Fiddlesticks, Primetime Draven, and Gentleman Cho'Gath). I even saw someone lose DJ Sona from the rental system. Riot needs to clarify that it removes the shard.

PhDs Nuts3 votes

Just an fyi: It doesn't say it consumes the shard on the current client.
