Has anything changed for the jungle?
OOOOOOOOOH BOY!
Wow, are you in for a surprise.
TL;DR the patch notes or any commentary for League since October.
4.18:
-
Sion got a rework, he's no longer goofy zombie that you only really play for screw-around games.
-
Akali wrecked face when she got fed and could survive in her shroud from enemies while waiting for cooldown. Rito says no to that, and took away the defensive stats and instead altered move speed. Since Akali could still gets kills when ahead after this change, this ended up being the beginning of a long line of sequential nerfs to the point where they ran out of ideas and just started breaking parts of her kit, e.g. her E doesn't proc Q anymore, etc. She's not exactly in a great place now.
-
Gangplank's ult now does consistent damage. No more treating it as an AoE slow and crossing your fingers!
4.19 End of Season, PBE Summoner's Rift update moved to live.
4.20 Pre-Season
General and Meta
- Introduction of Growth Stats, Mana Regen changed on all champions, Mana Regen changed on all items. New recommended Items. Death Timers changed.
- Towers: Inner towers now have a thin Solari Shield that is shared with nearby Champions. Base towers now use a laser that additionally slows.
- Items: Sword of the Divine, Atma's Impaler, and Executioner's Calling have been removed. Added Raptor Cloak (for the delayed ZZrot Portal) and Righteous Glory
*Introduction of "Strategic Diversity". This is the name of the new policy of Riot that means Riot will make changes to the game justified by improving "strategic diversity". (It's an oft repeated keyword for them) This is the reason behind changes to the jungle.
Jungle: Here we have the biggest changes and the changes to the meta
- Champions that were strong in the jungle such as Lee Sin and company had too much early game aggression. Therefore, to try to nerf early aggression and low level ganks, and consequently the champions who did such. Rather than adjust the the champions, the jungle was buffed to make it harder to clear, thinking it would prevent the early the early aggression and low level ganks, opening the jungle up to more types of junglers.
What actually is happened is that by making the jungle harder to clear trying to weaken the top tier junglers, well, making the jungle harder made it harder on everybody and the best junglers stayed the best junglers, now with less competition. Nowadays, junglers are bruiser only, According to those Diamonds who comment on such things, the competitive ranked junglers are only the top tier bruisers like Lee-Sin, Jarvan IV, Rek-Sai, and Vi. And that's about it.
Further changes to the jungle such as limiting the number of potions, two different price increases on machetes, two different smite buff nerfs, and reduction of soft resets have further dried up the pool of serviceable jungle picks.
