Hi, ive committed myself to top lane for 2 seasons now. i really want to improve my performance overall as a team member and need help. im a scruby plat, who plays safe/scaling/tank champs like gp, irelia, jayce, poppy, shen and etc.

recently i asked my diamond friend for advice and he says, it doesnt matter if you win lane if you lack pressure and presence. from observing my replays, it seems like i know my matchups and usually win lane, but i become absolutely clueless on what to do heading towards the mid game.

like, when do i roam? and why? should i go camp their jung? when do i ward enemy jung for intel?

ive tried roaming before, but it usually results into doing nothing and walking back to lane being 15-20 cs behind.

any tips will be much appreciated! thanks

With champs like Irelia Jayce Shen and Gp, you are generally going to be a good split pusher. Jayce Irelia and Gp just smash 1v1s late and have good tower presence (added to the fact that Gp has a global ultimate). Shen is a good split pusher late because his ult has a quicker channel time than tp so you can split and pull their top laner and you can respond quicker to a fight because of your ult. Even better, if you win said fight, you can just tp straight back to top lane and push for free. Then, next time you get it set back up, odds are you will have your ult up while their top laner tp is still down. When he says pressure, it doesn't always have to be total map pressure. Sometimes the best way to pressure is through top lane to draw attention towards yourself. They have to pay attention to you or else you just win the game through top lane. As long as you can survive the ganks or at least go 1 for 1 if you do get ganked, it's worth because then your team has priority of the rest of the map because they will have a 4v3 (potentially even a four 4v2 if they send two extra people to you).

I may not be good at this game but I can tell you with 100% confidence that Jayce does not have in any way a 'safe/scaling/tank' playstyle.

Well, I guess he's kinda safe due to being ranged and his melee E being what it is.

But Jayce is a super aggressive, super strong early game, champion who bullies lane, scales hard into mid-game, and falls off late game.

Auto attack the enemy champion any time you can get away with it, and do more damage to them than minions/they will do to you.

I assume you know not to switch forms near the enemy unless it's into melee and they have no way of getting onto you after you E them away, or if you've just landed a full ranged form combo.

Know your all in damage. Jayce has got huge, extremely fast, burst that can easily take 100% of someone's health with a perfect combo. Know when you've got enough damage to kill someone and pressure them super hard when you do.
