Summoner Spell Balance/Fixing Flash Suggestion

Saoquim··2 votes·809 views

This is inspired by rival suggestions that summoner 4 should be universal and that it should be removed from the game. It's without a doubt the strongest summoner spell. Most gameplay is focused around the use and availability of the spell.

Point System for Summoner Spells 3 Points to spend summoner 4 costs 2 All others cost 1 All spells can be upgraded for 1 additional point

This would incentivize opting out of summoner 4 because you get an upgraded version of one of the other spells. It would also allow for an upgraded version of summoner 4 at the cost of a second spell. It reintroduces summoner spell upgrades which I enjoyed from the old mastery trees.

Most importantly, it adds a lot more variety of gameplay.

Flash is very strong, which is why it has the highest cooldown out of all of then. Seriously I don't see the problem everyone suddenly has with flash. It's perfect, it creates so much room for outplays, escapes, engages etc.

Some champions play without flash. (Fiz top, hecarim, warwick, shaco .. )

Why the downvotes? I think this is actually a good idea.

Probably because it wouldn't solve anything, Flash just offers so much utility it wouldn't matter.

A better "solution" would be to make different versions of flash that combine flash with other summoner spell effects.

Like a Flash+Barrier: you flash a short distance and get a shield. So that instead of having to compete with Flash, you make Flash the standard and give different versions so its the secondary elements that compete.

The problem with this is of-course that it makes these spells even more powerful over the non-flash spells, and you can now no longer get their effect without flashing, and you'd have to limit it to only 1 flash-like spell per player otherwise double flash will become the new standard, and that creates a new problem of not being able to take two of the secondary effects. I suppose you could solve the last problem by removing the flash effect of the second Flash spell you take but thats not exactly a clean solution.

Yes, flash offers so much utility that it's not worth giving up except on a handful of champions. But what if it IS worth giving it up for a significantly powerful second spell? There's so much room to upgrade the other spells to make it as attractive as flash. Higher stats, lower cooldowns, bonus effects, and passive bonuses. What if the Ghost upgrade passively grants 20 movement speed? What if upgraded Barrier was a directional wall like Braum's shield? What if Cleanse upgrade shielded incoming CC like Malzahar's passive? What if each spell had two or three choices to choose from?

I'm realizing now that that's just asking to break the game. But it's Flash's fault, it's so broken that it makes the game boring.

Passive stat increases are more of a rune thing, but whatever.

It would have to be pretty gamebreaking to compete with flash, but would that solve anything? Whatever spell turns out best will simply become the new default instead of flash and you'd be back to square one. Or, due to your suggested point system, another non-upgraded spell would also become the default, since flash would be out of the picture, then you'll be looking at two new default spells for everyone with little variation. And if we're really unlucky ghost will be the new default for even less variety, even the normal exceptions will now be part of the new standard since those are usually ghost users.

I'm not saying its not worth experimenting, I just don't know how to solve this.
