Ranked Placements Question

So I've been playing this game game for two years(mostly aram) and have never been ranked before, but for this season I wanted to finally get into ranked. Yesterday I played my placement matches and I only won 3 out of 10 of my games(T_T) but I got placed into Bronze 1. This was probably because I kept getting placed with and against either Gold, Silver or unranked players doing their placements like me.

So my question is why did I kept on getting placed with and against silver and gold players when I was unranked and have never been ranked before. Literally the majority of my placement matches had a mix of silver and gold players and because I was losing so much the last few game dropped me with mostly silvers. But why against such higher ranked players compared to me? Shouldnt it have been with mostly bronze players.

Im not mad about where I got placed at all because all in all my experience doing ranked for the first time was pretty damn awful. Im just trying to understand how ranked placements work.

Your skills that showed in your normal games and ARAM games were similar to gold and silver players. When I played my placements I was against diamond people because I always played with my Diamond 3 friends.

i didnt understand this when first started ranked either, but the reason is because you have high mmr, your mmr from playing normal games is probably gold-silver level.

Thanks for the info Goku7474 and Bongo632. I didnt know things other than ranked could affect mmr and who you play against in placements but it makes sense.
