With Ryze's Mana scaling gone, how about we add in some MR/Mana items now?

It's the one combination we don't have that would help build paths. There really aren't many MR tank items out there. This could help remedy that. Ideas?? Hit me with your best shot! FIRE AWAY!

EDIT: What if an item was made to increase the cooldowns of nearby enemies by 5%? It's stats would grant 300 mana and 40 MR. This is just an idea off the top of my head. The ideas here are endless.

Unless a champion specifically scales with mana (Blitzcrank, Singed, ~Kassadin, Ryze), mana regeneration fulfills exactly the same end as mana. You can get item 3174, you can get item 3222 , you could even just get item 3028 and stop there.

Ryze isn't a problem with getting MR and Mana on the same item. He's basically the only champion that actually wants MR and Mana on the same item - big difference.

The problem being with Ryze's mana scaling was that if an item with MR/Mana was released, it'd be an indirect buff for Ryze. Ryze is too powerful already, so an item with that combo couldn't be released until he's been addressed.

EDIT: Oh! And excellent logic! I like the points you brought out. The only thing I have to say is why haven't they removed item 3070 if item 3028 did its job better? Some champions like having mana, so they can have a large mana pool.

All item changes are an indirect buff or nerf to the champions that can effectively use them.

Ryze isn't any more or less problematic in regards to itemization than a wide range of champions. I'd actually go with Ryze being considerably less problematic, seeing as scaling with mana alone is something so few champions do, it's easy to consider what can and cannot be abused.

The only thing I have to say is why haven't they removed item 3070 if item 3028 did its job better?

Because Tear upgrade into items that do rather different jobs, and it wouldn't make sense if one of those was used for all the items they can be built into.

Mean while Singed.

Edit There was actually quite a few champions removing mana from Banshee's effected.

All ~20 manaless champions don't feel taxed when grabbing it now. A wide range of champions that didn't care much about mana also have 1 less ~eh stat they don't feel good about having when getting it. Marksman, AD assassins, just about anyone with a Chalice or Tear, really did not benefit much from the mana on Veil.

Grabbing Veil for Mana and MR rather than MR and a shield that prevents champions like Annie or LeBlanc from insta-gibbing you is also awful design. There is no situation Veil should be grabbed where the unique passive is a happy bonus. Getting the spell shield is specifically why Veil should be grabbed. Durability against magic damage and the HP should be the second reason.

It was removed before the constant stream of manaless champions took over I believe.

Manaless champions have generally always been strong at the competitive level, and their ratio in regards to everyone else has stayed pretty consistent.

While we have Zed and Yasou now, there was Shyvana and Renekton previously, Riven before that, and Shen top for a few years. Mundo and Lee Sin have surfaced as a top pick multiple times over the game's history.

good pat benetar reference lol. since ryze is getting nerfed in that particular dept. it may lead to better itemization out of the catalyst. that item alone grants great health and mana for tanks (especially ones who scale well, malph nunu hec naut). we could get an item that build from catalyst towards an attack dmg or armor tank build instead of just RoA. or we could make a whole new item that can benefit from mana for tanky laners etc. i like where your mind is going good sir OP and i hope minds better than mine can come up with great ideas to follow up on

Tear, and its build paths, give you a larger direct mana pool. Chalice and its build paths give you you better mana sustain. Two very different goals.
