Are we done with Hyper Carries?

Is snowballing replacing classical hyper scaling (via farm and just surviving till you can blow up the enemy team?) Gangplank, Nasus, veigar, vayne, kassadin, and others have always been known for their disgusting late games, and adcs to the same extent use to have an air of scaling on an exponential scale, and with the exception of Kassadin, that seems to be fading from the game. Reasons vary greatly, one seems to be the snowbally feel that players have pointed out has remolded the game. The other, and perhaps most glaring, is the change in crit items, champions dont go from useless to broken when they finally finish their third item (or admittedly second), they scale up way more consistently. Gangplank is my favorite example of this. Tri -> essence reaver -> IE were generally his first three items when tri still offered crit, and if you got all three your dmg output was insane, but with only 2 barrels and way longer barrel cd early, you had to play intensely safe to get there. Now Gp gets tri and yomuus and thats the biggest spike he gets, his late game is still amazing, but his late game power has been shifted to earlier in the game both via items and buffs/ nerfs. Nasus can similarly win plenty of 1v1s by lvl 6 but late game it doesnt matter unless the enemy team has a poor comp. viegar scales better due to AP, but his early game is much better with DH. Adcs in general are up and running after stormrazor, and riot is again talking about shifting forward dmg.

I am not hating on anything above, Im just going through the reasoning that leads me to this question: are we done with hyper scalling/super late game champs?? is late game gonna mean 25 minutes instead of 40? (cause that seems to be what if feels like). Specifically tho, is casual hyper scaling getting replaced with snowballing?

I'll hate on it on your behalf. Snowballing is way too strong these days and it's ruining games.

Since the game isn't about strategy anymore there's little reason to pick late game champions.

I wondered the same thing after seeing the new jax nerf. I am a jax main, and agreed with riot's decision to nerf him; HOWEVER, I assumed they would nerf his early game. jax is the OG hypercarry, and seeing Riot choose to leave his current early game stronger than its been in years (maybe ever), and instead take damage out of his late really frustrated me. Late game jax is supposed to a be a terror; thats why I main him. So is Riot moving away from late-game hypercarry?

I hate the concept of hypercarry in this game. Sure, being a late game powerhouse is fun and all, but imo this negatively impacts both sides of the coin for 4 reasons:

  1. your only advantage is being insane late game with a high chance of winning at that point. it means that you are nearly useless early- mid. it also means that you always need to play holocaust survivor early game and survive being bullied as long as you can. there is pressure on you to farm well, not fuck up and die, or feed, which you become even more useless at the point of no return. there is also pressure on teammates such as support if you're adc or jungler to babysit and make sure you are ok.
  2. the same goes for the enemy team. they have massive time limit pressure to get an advantage or end the game become the hypers get their powerspike and become nearly unstoppable. its never fun to be pressured even more than usual while playing this stressful game. this is why i never had any fun whenever there was a vayne or a nasus or a yasuo in the enemy team.
  3. it restricts the champion's build and alternative playstyles. because you are balanced around being a hypercarry, you HAVE to play like a hypercarry, or else you gonna get your bottom ripped apart. this is why i don't play Azir and Kindred. despite absolutely LOVING their kits, i hate their playstyles or being useless till 3 items or in kindred's case, being stuck as a jungler. same goes for the opposite, the early game bullies. I love playing as Renekton, Rumble or any tank for the matter, but its not fun being useless after x amount of minutes
  4. It makes hypercarries in alternative gamemodes nearly useless by default since they are all shorter, unless you can go a more powerful, unbalanced build. there is a reason ap kog'maw, ap nasus and full lethality Jhin outclass their usual builds in ARAM, TT and Ascension.

The only exceptions are Jax and Veigar which are both already powerful and cancerous by mid game

They shifted GP from sick late to meh early (with Grasp, even tho now they have Armor runes its worse then meh) and an okayish midgame. Late game, if it ever happens is so weak compared to S7 and every season before. Especially as GP you can get farmed so hard, pick Aatrox, Riven, Kled, Vlad or any other of these 'balanced' Champs and enjoy the stomp. So if you don't get ahead early, get your Tri and Lethality before the 20 Minute mark..well..it's over anyway cuz one of your teammates fed the Akali/Zed/Talon/insert other disgusting Champ.

Nasus is not good late game. He gets kited more than almost any champion and cannot teamfight. He just dominates mid game around 1-2 items if he wasn't shut down early.

Well, one of the major problems that makes hyper carries bad right now is just the fact that if they're early game is not powerful, they just get blown up denying them of farm, thus making them reach late game a lot later, combined with the fact that games last much shorter on average. People also tilt very quickly and either afk or troll, making games even shorter and not allowing you to ever reach your powerspike.

So to answer your question, yes, hyper scaling is getting replaced with snowballing because unless you get a very good team that can stall the game long enough and not ff15 because you died first blood, then hyper scaling is just gone and you would much better be off playing a snowballing champion.
