Regarding Sona's Damage

Norscout·8/5/2015, 10:12:53 PM·24 votes·13,181 views

I believe it's time we buff Sona a bit of a damage buff. She used to be a threat in lane, that was her niche. Now....I really don't feel like I'm making the impact I used to. Her zoning potiental has dropped significantly because people dont fear her anymore. Yes, I too remember the days of Sona roflstomping every lane she's in, and that's not what I'm going for. Sona just isn't a threat anymore, and for her to be effective again, this needs to be addressed.

Thank you.

I didn't read anything

Meanwhile I'm here complaining that she pokes for 400 with Q/passive/sheen.

Shroom Junkie8/5/2015, 10:20:00 PM6 votes

Wut. I get bursted by support Sona all the time. Heck, her poke is maddening enough, but she can HEAL too? Heck, heal multiple people.

Nameless Voice8/5/2015, 10:16:12 PM6 votes

This feels like a problem with poke supports in general. Everyone is playing big beefy tank supports with massive CC, who are both really resistant to her poke and have the skillset to lock her down and murder her for being so squishy.

Her Q range is overbearing and has no counterplay if she is good at it.

With a Sheen early she can basically poke both people out of lane and toss out R if anything crazy happens.

The only way I would be cool with more Sona damage is if her heal loses its shield and her Q range is reduced.

+1 sick of being a shield and speed bot while I have to try so hard to harass.

+1 for picture as well.

Sona still hits like a truck - only post-rework Sona needs to spend her Q buff (empowered AA) to get meaningful damage. Q alone tickles.

Sona's poking potential is hurt by 2 things that aren't really her fault:

  1. Popular supports atm are bulky, meaning they don't care as much - they're also packed with hard CC, making it dangerous for Sona to go around them to target the ADC cowering behind the Leona/Ali/Braum.
  2. Because popular supports are melee tanks, they build Relic Shield. This item I absolutely hate, it gives sustain to champions who were never intended to be balanced around having sustain. So while you're trying to poke down a tanky support, he's being his own lane's Sona by last hitting creeps whenever he has charges up.

If you manage to get her against a mage support whose name is not Annie (Annie explodes Sona), or against another fellow squishy support, she's as strong as she's ever been. She does well against Karma, Zyra, Morgana (Q+Staccato = cute shield, Morg, cute shield...), Bard; she has an even lane against Nami and Lulu. She crushes Janna. She can stop Soraka if she packs Ignite. She even does decent against the Mighty Thresh (provided she can juke hooks properly) because he's actually deceptively squishy early game (also, he is ranged so no scaling MR for him).

Also, I've personally had more success with her with AP-ish support build (with stuff like item 3092 item 3040 item 3023 item 3504 item 3165 item 3050 for instance) than I've had with the cookie cutter defensive support build (item 3222 item 3069 item 3190 ). Even if her heal and MS buff don't have fantastic ratios, it does make a difference when you look at the healing you did across the game.

I also found that I do better with item 3009 or item 3111 or even item 3047 than item 3117 which are usually my go-to support boots because I feel she gets punished pretty damn hard if she gets caught out in combat. item 3009 especially are nice imo because she always has an edge in mobility with those, and ignores slows more easily.

She doesnt need more damage, she needs more MILK!

DrMarshSwamp8/8/2015, 11:56:37 PM1 votes

I don't think her damage is necessarily the issue so much as her other two abilities not really having much of an impact in the early/mid game.

I think her base damage should be lowered a bit, maybe her scaling increased, and then buff her other two abilities in other ways.

Course I'm not really a Sona player, but from playing against her thats how I think she might need to be changed since it felt like she could chunk a good amount of health with an unmissable Q.

For some reason it felt more funny when HateDaddy did it.

+1 for the picture though.

As long they do not change how simple Sona is... no way they are going to buff her. Make her kit more complex, then we can talk, but in the current state, nope.

A Miss Fortune8/5/2015, 11:13:32 PM1 votes

I have to disagree on buffing Sona's damage. I believe I did the math a while ago, because after maining Sona in the past for over 130 games I wondered "Why am I doing so much damage".

Taking in her Q/Passive combo (Which is basically like Viktor's Q, one half a low-ish damage, undodgeable spell, and the other greatly increasing his next auto attack power)

She does with the entire Q (Hymn of Valor) + Passive (Power Chord) combo:

492 Base Magic Damage + 90% Ability Power Scaling

Taking in consideration none of this is dodgeable, and works with Lich Bane, on top of Lich Bane and an average AP Mid build, you can easily one-shot a squishy.

I don't think Sona is really a threat in bot lane, but I don't think she can be since her entire kit (Which a person pointed out a while ago on the Boards) is just numbers. I do think that she can succeed in mid lane though, but every time I see a Sona in bot lane she gets demolished unless she and her ADC have perfect synergy.

Norscout, what damage do you want buffed in which aspect of the game? Her AAs? Her Q poke? Her ult? Her passive? Laning? Mid game? End game?

ChaosThief8/5/2015, 11:47:34 PM1 votes

The thumbnail though...

To be honest though, I have done sona mid a few times. Her damage seems good enough.

Though the heal/shield, I would prefer if they moved some of the shield into a heal, because the heal feels... underbearing. Also, the heal sometimes heals less than it should, but I don't know much about that, so I might poke around to find that out.

Rabid Husky8/6/2015, 12:09:26 AM1 votes

tried full ap sona instead of full support set sona? my friend mains sona and during the laneing phase, lv 1 mind you, she qs 3 times and then auto attacks and half hps a enemy hell ive done mid sona in the past the almost deletes squishies before 3 like were talking half hp here im gonna have to disagree with you here

ZephyrDrake8/6/2015, 4:50:51 AM1 votes

b-but how would people then complain how she at lvl 1 still wrecks them and completely destroys them... even though she only gets to deal 40+20+18+auto attack damage, magic damage without any AP! how can people survive at lvl 1 when she is doing maybe a little bit over 100 damage before mr and armor is factored!

A little Peepo8/6/2015, 1:40:10 PM1 votes

If tanks can deal damage why can't supports? Supports should be able to fight back without having annie burst damage
