Sona still hits like a truck - only post-rework Sona needs to spend her Q buff (empowered AA) to get meaningful damage. Q alone tickles.
Sona's poking potential is hurt by 2 things that aren't really her fault:
- Popular supports atm are bulky, meaning they don't care as much - they're also packed with hard CC, making it dangerous for Sona to go around them to target the ADC cowering behind the Leona/Ali/Braum.
- Because popular supports are melee tanks, they build Relic Shield. This item I absolutely hate, it gives sustain to champions who were never intended to be balanced around having sustain. So while you're trying to poke down a tanky support, he's being his own lane's Sona by last hitting creeps whenever he has charges up.
If you manage to get her against a mage support whose name is not Annie (Annie explodes Sona), or against another fellow squishy support, she's as strong as she's ever been. She does well against Karma, Zyra, Morgana (Q+Staccato = cute shield, Morg, cute shield...), Bard; she has an even lane against Nami and Lulu. She crushes Janna. She can stop Soraka if she packs Ignite. She even does decent against the Mighty Thresh (provided she can juke hooks properly) because he's actually deceptively squishy early game (also, he is ranged so no scaling MR for him).
Also, I've personally had more success with her with AP-ish support build (with stuff like
for instance) than I've had with the cookie cutter defensive support build (
). Even if her heal and MS buff don't have fantastic ratios, it does make a difference when you look at the healing you did across the game.
I also found that I do better with
or
or even
than
which are usually my go-to support boots because I feel she gets punished pretty damn hard if she gets caught out in combat.
especially are nice imo because she always has an edge in mobility with those, and ignores slows more easily.
