You're not ready to rework mages right now

You know why I liked Season 5? Because I really felt like I could main just about any champion and succeed with it with enough practice. The items were fairly well balanced across the classes and the number of OP champs was small enough to ban most of them out on a regular basis. The handful of OP champs that made it through champ select usually had a clear counter of some sort. There were a couple of brief moments when certain classes were a tad strong, but the fixes were fairly simple.

That's not the case anymore. Your little reworks and tweaks you made during the offseason has pushed this game to a much larger pool of OP champions, too many to ban out even if both teams did get 5 bans, and the you somehow managed to kill half the counters in the game along the way. If you don't have a team full of OP champs now you lose the game with very few exceptions. So players have two options right now - 1) pick the same 1 or 2 OP meta picks for their role and have a good shot at winning, or 2) pick something else and hope your opponent sucks more than you.

Now you're doing a mage review that will probably only throw things even more out of whack. Just stop. Put on the fucking brakes for a moment and look at this cluster fuck you've created. The ADC review was so bad, so terribly handled that 3 man ADC comps is a thing, and honestly you could go 4 or 5 man without it being troll.

I've been playing this game for 4 years or so now and have never felt so bullied into playing specific champions and specific item paths. I could always find that niche champ with the undervalued build path and have fun and success with it. That's just not the case anymore. The juggernaut update wasn't that bad, their lack of mobility kept them in line and their itemization (mostly just health stacking with some AD thrown in) was manageable. The kits themselves were pretty fun and only some minor number tweaks were needed to balance things out. We are way beyond number tweaks to fix the current power mismatches you've created.

You don't realize it at first. It's not until you actually play against a Lux, Lucian, Soraka, Udyr, Fiora or a Kalista, Alister, Xin, Poppy, Corki team that you realize there is only one way to play the game now - and that's with the most oppressive champions you can grab. What a pitty that a game so oriented around strategy is reduced to simply having the most OP champions. The strategy of making every champion OP so that none will be OP may eventually work once you review every champion, but you have to maintain some kind of balance over the 2-3 years it takes to actually review every champion.

And don't tell me it's always been this way, it hasn't, at least not on the scale we're seeing now. This time in LoL history is unique in that the sheer number of legitimate OP champions is rather large but also less than 70% of the total pool, and games are essentially just about who managed to grab the biggest guns in champ select. I don't want to just play the biggest gun, I want to play my champ. I love this new queue want to master 4-5 champs in my role and make those my mains; I don't want to pick the same champ every game because not doing so means my opponent gets a free win.

Put on the fucking brakes and put it in reverse for a bit. You are not ready to play god with mages right now. You still haven't cleaned up your mess from the first crash.

i'm still playing Akali jungle, Ezreal non-blue build, Pantheon support, and other strange out-there picks, and i'm not having any less success with them than i was previously.

I don't play ranked but I'm with you. I still pick what's fun. If I get stomped by a lcs meta lord I accept that my enemy only wants to win that hard.

Non-meta picks are fun, and aren't ruled out. The OP options only shut you out if they get fed and no-one knows how to stop them. In all honesty, I see straight stats win too often because half the team doesn't know how to play creatively. Maybe the champion pool isn't the problem? But I don't play too often, so I can't say for certain what is.
