besides high defense, tanks need hard initiation, utility, cc to peel for their allies or lock down enemies.

Malphite Sion Nautilus Leona Sejuani Amumu Alistar Braum tanks

Darius Garen Shyvana Irelia Volibear not tanks.

fighters are basically beefy carries without much mobility or cc. they can bodyblock some skillshots for an ally if necessary, but its not their main job.

high defense doesnt make a champ a tank.

shyvana is a brusier/fighter, call them what you want. but she has no way to lock someone up or peel for an ally if necessary. her main job is dealing damage.

she's closer to being a melee ADC than being a tank, seeing as all her abilities scale with how often you autoattack enemies too

The fact that people aren't mentioning Sion is strange Infinitely scaling HP and a % max health shield means he's potentially the beefiest tank of them all. Unfortunately with itemization as it is now, Tanks don't hold up under focus fire for long. The dream of beating someone just because you're that tanky only comes when their ADC didn't buy Last Whisper. Nowadays for a tank to survive against an enemy champion they have to do a bunch of damage which is annoying to play against

Technically it's Sion, since his W shield will scale infinitely if left alone to farm, but realistically it's probably Alistar with his ult up. When Ali doesn't have his ult, it's likely Nautilus, since his shield scales extremely well with health, and late game you usually get about 800 HP in shields in addition to your normal ~5K HP.

That would be sion technically if there weren't so much %health in this game. I'm pretty sure Sion with 1 billion health dies faster than Alistar under ult against a team with a lot of %health

against physical damage, yes.

full build malphite ( item 3047 item 3068 item 3143 item 3075 item 3110 ) feels like the only real tank at the moment.

if you dont have 4000 hp and 800 armor, combined with auto attack damage reduction, some carries blow you up no matter what you do.

except for an ulting alistar maybe.

More often than not, I see unkillable Malphites compared to all the others listed.

Tahm Kench can be hard to kill too, but Malphite definitely takes the cake for me.

thats why i currently like him. he isnt unkillable, but a lot of adc neglect armor pen even when youre playing malphite. they end up dealing no damage to you even when moderately fed because of poor choice of itemization.

i found that a full build malphite is the only one who can actually deal with lategame vayne.

if you have 750 to 800 armor, even the new shitty thornmail damage becomes noticable. and since she relies on attack speed builds more than crit builds, it actually returns enough damage to kill her in combination with e and ult.

TahmKench Malphite Vladimir Braum Gnar item 3075 item 3748 gaining damage based on your defensive stats is pretty common actually. Rammus and Volibear are definitely the best at it

It depends on what you mean. Thresh can have theoretically infinite armor, and Sion can have theoretically infinite health. So Sion, then Thresh.

i wouldnt classify mundo as a tank either. he would actually fit more into the "juggernaut" line of heavy fighters. what he does is basically walk up into melee range and deal as much damage as possible. his q is more of a tool to stick than to peel, and he has no initiate.

Having high base damages doesn't make someone not a tank. Literally every viable tank has high damage that doesn't scale well with offensive items.

but all tanks need hard initiate and utility to peel. you cant compare garen or darius to actual tanks like nautilus or sejuani.

they cant open fights by stunlocking multiple targets from considerable distance or peel enemies off their squishies. most of the time they need a tank themselves to engage for them and allow them to get to their desired targets to deal damage.

Lack a strong execute and helareduce? goodluck takeing down lategame mundo or Gallio Spam alot skills with no heal reduce? happy funtime with the tree healing 7% hp each AA Full ad morons with no armorpenfor whhat ever stupid reason? maplh will be imortal, tarik will get his entier team damn tanky, and ramus is just ok, thogh rammus is always ok as long as no %pen is built. Alistar. While his ult's up, he gets 70% bonus effective health. Comparisons are Tahm Kench, who gets 44% bonus effective health if he goes down to one life before procing his E, Garen gets 30% bonus effective health with W. Armor is too hard for me to calculate ;(, so I'd say Alistar.

Alistar has the highest health at level 18, as well as the highest Magic Resist at 53.4 (Tied with several champions).

Although many tanks have higher Armor than he does, so they might be tankier against physical damage than him.

If we go by infinite scalling, Sion is the tankiest, followed by Thresh (Against physical damage) and Alistar (Against Magic Damage).

Including masteries, Thresh ties with Sion since Adaptive Armor allows him to get infinite Magic Resist as well, although technically, true damage is still a thing.

This is, of course, not counting abilites.
