Question about MMR rating

Does your normal mmr have anything to do with what I will get placed in ranked? I get queued with plat-diamond players every game in my normal games, does this mean if I go play ranked when I have enough champions this is the rank I will see?

No, your normals mmr is entirely independant of your ranked mmr, and vice versa.

Ok thanks, so hypothetically if I were to go play ranked and win all my play in games what is the highest rank I can start with? I know I am going to inevitably going to have to grind out to get my rank higher but what is the highest starting rank I could hope to achieve?

It depends on the mmrs of who you happen to get matched with, so if you duo with a gold player who happens to have plat+ mmr, you'll gain a lot more from your 10 placement matches than if you solo or duo with a bronze player with low mmr. Theres challenger smurfs out there who on fresh accounts have managed to get placed plat 5 as a side effect of duoing with their high mmr friends on their smurfs for example.

As a solo player I'd expect low gold for a 10/0 start though. That said, if it's your first time ranked, I would not expect to go 10/0, and would in fact expect you to be placed high bronze with a more average score, so perhaps tune your expectations accordingly.

I doubt I will get placed as low as bronze, considering I fit in with the high elo players I get in normals, my friend is ranked diamond so if I duo queue with him for my placements I have better chance of ranking higher? That's really my question at this point how do they know how to place you exactly if it isn't based on other games

You actually can't duo if your Friend is diamond and you've never ranked. There's a system in place that only allows people to rank with Gold as the highest if they've not ranked before.

Also when you rank with another person it tends to skew the ranking, so it will make the MMR higher that you fight against, but the MMR you gain in the end may turn out lower.

Riot's system is really screwy overall.

They start everyone at silver 4ish mmr since that's roughly the 'average' skill level of starting players in theory.

You then play your 10 placement matches, and your mmr goes up when you win, and down when you lose, with the magnitude of the changes depending on the mmr's of those in your game. After your 10 games, it looks at your mmr, and gives you a rank appropriate to that mmr. (Future ranked seasons look at your ranked mmr in that queue from the previous season.)

In the extremely unlikely event you happen to be playing at a plat/diamond level, you'd end up placing somewhat lower than your skill level and have to play a couple more dozen games to actually get to plat/diamond, so you'd have some fun stomping at first. It's important to remember the normals/ranked mmr thing being independent of one another works both ways though, so theres lots of plat+ players at relatively low normals elo, and also since it's normals very few high ranked players are actually playing their main champs/roles there.

To be fair though, I don't see anything glaringly wrong in your match history, so you may well be better than most starting ranked players.

Oh yeah, regarding duoing, you start as 'silver' for who you're allowed to duo with, and you can only duo within one tier of you, so bronze-gold to start.

If you duo with someone with bronze mmr, your games will feature lower mmr players that the system 'expects' you to win, so you get very little mmr for your wins (but you lose a lot of mmr if you lose). If you duo with someone with high mmr, the game will feature players with relatively high mmr, so the system 'expects' you to lose, so you don't lose much mmr when you lose, but gian a lot when you win.

In theory, the increased difficulty of the matches would result in a lower winrate, but if you have the skill to handle it so end up winning the majority despite duoing with a high mmr person (keeping in mind the duo restrictions), you would place higher than if you just solo'd.

(Keep in mind it's mmr's that matter though. Occasionally people will duo with their gold friend who actually has a silver mmr and not actually benefit themselves.)

Ranked MMR starts at silver level (it was 1200 before they started hiding it)

Since you haven't played ranked before that's where you will start before you do placements. You may be able to place into gold if you go 10-0. Most likely you will place in silver.

When the next season starts there is a soft reset on MMR so you get to keep some of your previous season MMR. So then it becomes easier to place higher in the new season assuming you had higher than silver MMR before.

Bronze is basically negative MMR, it's below the starting MMR. So you most likely will not place into Bronze unless you get unlucky in placements.

Since you seem to play high MMR normals I suggest you duo with a friend in ranked who is already plat or higher. Someone who is gold but has high LP gains works too (this indicates high MMR) and what happens is the MMR of the games you play will be higher than your starting ranked MMR which will allow you to gain MMR quickly. You will see this indicated by high LP gains.

edit: I forgot about the restrictions on duos. Rank with somebody who is gold and has high LP gains.

ok if its your first season.. and your a fresh thirty..

first things first..

DON'T PLAY RANKED!!! and STAY AWAY FROM MOBAFIRE!!! even lolking is better. and that one is pretty bad at times too

you have WAY too much to learn, before u do ranked

trust me" i ranked into silver 1 i season 3..

i played like i was in bronze 3

i didnt know the game.. i didnt know the matchups. i didn't know basic things, like "supports should be buying item 2049 " and not a item 3025

you WILL inevitably be placed MUCH higher than where u belong, becuase EVERY new players is bronze. if your not placed in bronze... then you are going to bring every team you are put on down your team until you get demoted there at the start of the next season. (if not sooner)

believe me (and i know you wont becuase even I myself didnt belive the people who told me this back then) "You ARE NOT good" YOU THINK ARE, but you're not. i did still in ranked in season three some of which i and still ashed to admit and i wish i could profusely apologize to any teammates who had to deal with me that season..

play 1 season unranked, w/e patch you joined on like 7.6 or something.. wait until 8.6 until you play ranked.. by that time you should know ENOUGH about the game to place relatively accurately. AND you wont get instantly demoted after you get placed

I KNOW THIS SOUNDS HARSH.

but its being human. i myself was hot steaming garbage who thought i was "great" about coming off sc2 "hero attack" with 95% win rate becuase i played in a group of 5 pre-made players who only played that custom games vs 5 complete randoms.

if you don't believe me now.. (which you wont) you will in 2 years

playfor an entire year before u play ranked, you will thank yourself later.

Not to belittle your opinion but I know enough that I can play ranked I believe and for the champions I play I am pretty well versed, I could expand on my champ pool for sure though

if you have been playing with a diamond friend who is showing you the ropes you are likely much better off than most.

and no you wont even be ABLE to que with him as unranked the system wont LET you. (as far as i know) i know a silver cannot que duo with a diamond.

in flex it will surely let you, but flex is just another name for the abomination that was "dynamic boost que"

it is impossible to place higher than gold in placements, again the system wont let you

even if you win all ten placements u get gold

i won the first eight out of ten, i was placed in silver 1. which ironically was a very accurate measurement of my skill the NEXT season. however at the TIME i was placed there i was EASILY bronze.

and like i said.. i dont expect you to believe me. my past self i wouldn't have believed me either so.. that's fine. i dont expect you to.

that being said. do NOT expand your champsion pool

infact spend more time getting better at the champions you play.

learn w/e two roles you and and have at least 2-3 options in those roles, give give a crap about learning champs that are "meta" by the time you lern them they wont be "meta anymore" play a champion that calls to you. you should know in one game if it is the champion for you. Nidalee is my main.. she has been since day 1... and regardless of her strength i have ALWAYS had the most fun playing HER

find you champsion.. and find one of two more.

if the two roles u like are NOT support. also make it a point to master at LEAST two supports.

i reccomend getting ANY champion you EVER plan on using in ranked to mastery 6.. MINIMUM 5 before bringing it into ranked

dont worru about not having "20 playable ranked champions" that requirement is bullshit. and is ONLY there to prevent the system from having all 19 other champsion you own picked or banned. (which is 4 years of playing had never even gotten CLOSE to happening ONCE) (even back when it was 16)

just learn the one you want then buy some cheap 450 champs to get to 20.

In principle the highest anyone can ever place is plat 1, but that's only possible for high diamond+ players doing their placements in a following season.

On a fresh account it's extremely unlikely to place higher than gold, but it's not impossible, as some streamers have managed plat 5 after placements on fresh accounts (somewhat to their own surprise). It takes a little luck to just happen to have matches where mmr's are high, on top of duoing with high mmr'd people, but theres no system level restrictions stopping someone from placing into plat.

Normals MMR and Ranked MMR are different. Generally, when playing Normals you can have some crazy MMR as everyone is all over the place. Ranked MMR most people are in the same areas so it's not as bad. When you first start ranking, then general MMR is set to around mid silver, though the better you do (more wins to losses) you can go higher from placements.
