Why do we need essence for champion levels 6 and 7?

I feel like it's dumb that we need to use essence just to upgrade to the next level for our champion mastery. I feel like if we already have the champion, why do we need essence just to upgrade to the next level.

originally it was just level 5 but level 5 meant nothing because you could get it without ever winning a single match

6 and 7 were then added, you can still get them without ever winning but its a lot harder now
