No. Don't get me wrong, he's fun and not that bad, but you might as well buy all the 4800 and cheaper champs first. Still probably better than buying Azir or Kalista.

Don't. Never. His playstyle also has a very negative influence on how you will play if you do it too.
Consider it an investment for when RIot finally fixes him and makes him playable for people who don't have 500 games on him already.
he is REALLY strong when he is ahead(like fed ahead) almost 1v5 unkillable strong ... but many champions are
however he is pretty weak overall their really isnt an aspect he excels in currently(so getting ahead is hard)....BUT if youre low elo he can actually be pretty dang strong he can punish poor mechanics pretty well and has a revive and strong escape to save yourself if your mechanics fail
so if you're low elo/ like playing him buy him... but from a meta/relative power stand point there are better fighters
so all in all... no stand out strengths like other fighters have such as, Fioras dueling/lategame, rumbles mid game and constant power from his ult , or just everything about Poppy and Trundle
but revives( to add extra damage in fights and save you from ganks)... aoe knockup with an even larger aoe slow (that is also a good escape) and a good safe harass ability/cs'ing ability makes him solid in lower elo
Aatrox is pretty bad only because of his number. His kit is a godmode, but they will never allow him to dominate the rift. His DPS is insane with his 2 AS steroid and the W pseudo crit. Also his Q is retarded (similar to Tristana's jump). It's ridiculous ...

I mean, there are probably better options out there at the moment, but you can make Aatrox work in lower elo. He is similar to Xin Zhao. He plitpushes like a beast, has so much duelling power with a lot of sustain and damage, can initiate a fight in some way, but he is best used to splitpush.

Aatrox is good, people are trash.
He was worth 6300 during the time when he came out, but in today's current meta he's only worth 3150 (probably even less like 1350). He's still good just not as great as he once was because of his kit being made during a time where sustain was everything for a top laner.

He's not awful but his kit is kind of just bad. Unless you really really know what you're doing with him you'll fail.
He's pure cheese. You can make him work but you have to abuse his cheese and snowball. Still underpowered though. If you're just looking for a champion to carry you to a higher elo, Aatrox isn't it.
