Drawing Parallels in Juggernaut Kits

EbonyBladeJ88··8 votes·6,610 views

TL;DR: Each Juggernaut Kit follows a certain pattern: Auto-Attack Reset on a Skill (Be it Q,W or even E), CC on W or E (In rare cases Q), and something unique for the Ult, though certain similarities can be drawn. (Executes, Transformations, etc.)

First off, I'm not going to try and draw parallels in the passives of the 12 (At this time of writing, anyway) Juggernauts in the game. Most are pretty well distinguished from one another, perhaps with the exception of DrMundo , Garen and Volibear having HP-Regen related passives.

Mundo's is always active and regens a fixed amount (O.3% of his Max Health), Garen's is active when avoiding damage (O.2%/0.8% After avoiding damage for 9 seconds, or 4 seconds if he's level 11 or higher), and Volibear's activates after his health is lowered to a certain percentage (Dips below 30%, he regens 30% over the next 6 seconds).

AUTO-ATTACK RESETS

Now a common theme in Juggernaut kits is an Auto-Attack resetting skill. Most of them have it on their Q (Such as Garen , Nasus & Yorick to name a few) or on their W (Such as Illaoi , Darius has his on W, and one could say Urgot 's W is a Reset maybe). DrMundo is the odd man out for having a Auto-Attack reset on his E, and Udyr (Based on what I read on his Wiki page) doesn't even GET one, probably due to the nature of his kit.

CROWD CONTROL

Next, their various forms of CC. Most have their main CC on their W or E (Such as Darius 's Pull on his E, Udyr 's Stun with Bear Stance on E) but usually this is pretty varied. For example, Garen and DrMundo have their CC on their Q's (Garen's Silence, Mundo's Slow if the Cleaver connects) or for contrast, Illaoi 's slow only activates if she successfully turns her target into a Vessel, which is on her Skill-shot E, or Trundle's AOE Slow on his E with his Pillar. Then there's Nasus whose slow is on his W. Yorick gets a Slow on his Skill-Shot E, but it's not all that strong and serves more to grant him a 20% MS Boost so he can then lock up the target with his W Wall (Which in IMO is his REAL CC). Urgot gets a small dash and flings his target behind him if they collide, and that's on his E. His Q also has a small slowing effect if it his a champion. Shyvana gets a pushback effect depending on if she collides with a target during her Ult's initial dash, and Mordekaiser of course has no real CC at all!

ULTIMATES

Lastly, the Ultimate Skills.

The elephant in the room with this section is obviously Udyr , as he doesn't even HAVE an Ultimate, he just has 4 basic skills that grant passive effects alongside his ACTUAL passive.

Next, we see that 1/3rd, or 4 of the 12 Juggernauts ( Darius Garen Mordekaiser and Urgot ) have Execute-effects to their ults, either granting a bonus effect if the target dies to it, or the ult does increased damage (Or in Urgot 's case, a Suppress that leads to an instant kill) to low health targets. This does not mean these ults are all exactly alike, it's just that an Execute-effect is a common thread in Juggernaut Ults.

Bonus AFTER the target dies Ults:

Darius : If the target is killed, Darius gets his Ult reset.

Mordekaiser : If the target dies, Mordekaiser gets a controllable ghost.

Bonus WHILE the target is at low health Ults:

Urgot : If the target dips below or is below 25% health during or at the end of the 4 second period following the initial blow, Urgot can suppress and reel them in for an unavoidable kill, unless Urgot himself dies during the suppression period.

Garen : The target is dealt the initial magic damage (Or true damage, if target is the Villain) as well as additional damage equal to a certain percentage of their missing health, dependent on the rank of the Ult, 28.6% for lvl 1, 33.3% for lvl 2 or 40% for lvl 3.

Then 2 of the Juggernauts have Transformation Ults, where they take a new form of a period of time.

Nasus : He grows in size for a number of seconds, gaining health, Armor and MR, and deals Max %HP Damage to those around him. His Q's cool-down is reduced while this is active.

Shyvana : She pushes anyone in her path in the opposite direction of her dash and takes her Dragon form, gaining bonus effects on her other skills.

Next, the more unique Ults.

Illaoi : She deals a moderate amount of initial damage, and creates tentacles for each champion hit by that initial blow, and her W's cool-down is massively reduced while fighting near those tentacles.

Trundle : Drains his target's health and resistances, a small burst initially then more over the next 4 seconds.

Yorick : Summons his Waifu/Maiden and some Mist-Walkers, and she stays on the battlefield till she, or Yorick himself, dies. If the two attack the same target, bonus Max %HP damage is dealt to the target.

DrMundo : Gains MS and immense levels of Regen.

Volibear : Deals an initial burst of magic damage, and his AA's for the next 8 seconds bounce and deal more magic damage to additional targets.

CONCLUSION

So there we have it! A number of similarities, as well as the notable differences, in the Kits of our wondrous Juggernauts. If you've read this far, thanks for reading my thoughts and GL and HF in your games! [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I'm sure if I went through painstakingly like I did with the Juggernauts here, some differences, as well as similarities, could be found. But, Juggernauts are my favorite class, and it was out of my love for them that I made this.

I could make this into a series, I don't know. If I do, I'll probably follow this one up with Divers, rather than Marksmen, as Divers are the other Fighter Subclass.

They retracted that. Actually

[sg-janna] damnit. I wish my boi had a class. Because he isn't a warden (no defensive abilities) He isn't a vangaurd (no engage ability) and now he isn't a juggernaut (no large sustain ability with large amounts of offensive and defensive power at the cost of mobility)

no riot considers him as "unique playstyle" with champions like Singed, Azir, Kennne, Gp, old urgot and some more. old list: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/developer-corner/3A5uuBw7-champion-subclass-list somewhat more new list (but still nearly 1 year old): https://euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/gameplay/taking-another-look-subclasses

Yes now, you are correct, sir!

He is a "Specialist"! Riot basically classifies these people as: We don't know what to do with these people. Here's a label for them until we can get them in the sights of the VGU guns. (Just my take on it)

Häxel1 votes

Well i would have said this with the original "specialist", where just cho, Singed, Fiddel, old Urgot, Kennen and Blitz in. But the updated list has put blitz into the new catcher class and added many other champions to "specialist" such as Azri, Graves, Heimer, Gangplank etc, who probably not get any VGUs soon ;)

i thought so too. at least his q and his e.

edit.: huh, tried it an apparantly not. thats surprising.

I looked at the tool-tips for his skills, both listed on the Wiki, and in-game (Via the practice tool) and while other Juggernauts have little notes in them like as follows...

Garen : "Decisive Strike resets Garen's autoattack timer."

Darius : "Crippling Strike resets Darius's autoattack timer."

Nasus : "Siphoning Strike resets Nasus' autoattack timer."

Udyr has no such notification on any of his 4 skills, thus, he gets no Auto-Attack Reset. Perhaps his VGU in the future might change that by giving him the more standardized 3 skills, 1 ult setup and thus, an Auto-Attack Resetting skill, but I would think that Udyr mains are too used to his current style to want it changed THAT much. The main thing they clamor about is a Model and Animations, or Visual Update more than Gameplay. Now I could be wrong, I don't know off-hand if there is a Reddit or Sub-reddit called "UdyrMains" or anything like that who might voice such concerns.

EDIT: Also, I'm not saying he's slated for a VGU, I've just heard a few people here and there mention him as a candidate.

Interesting question for you all, I have 210k mastery on ma boi Kayn and I still can't quite figure out if Rhaast is supposed to be a juggernaut, or a fighter. I put him in a special category of juggernaut, since his tankiness/durability in fights scales a lot better from his CDR and damage rather than building flat health and armor like most juggernauts do.

Not to mention he's the juggernaut that every tank player ever doesn't want to play against, but aren't juggernauts supposed to be anti-squishy not anti-tank?

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Rhaast is a Diver that dips heavily into the Juggernaut class as well.

EbonyBladeJ881 votes

Kayn is the first type of champion that I would call "Multi-Class". He becomes one of the following depending on the form he takes:

Shadow Assassin: He becomes exactly what the name implies, an Assassin/Slayer, meant to go after squishies.

Rhaast: As Z3Sleeper here said, Rhaast is more of a Diver than a Juggernaut, but he dips into some of their tropes.

He's more mobile because of his "Shadow Walk" ability (Allowing him to phase through walls). That small dash on his Q, while not a whole lot, grants more mobility as well. The only one that has anything close to that in the Juggernaut lineup is Illaoi with the VERY small dash her W gives her.

However, he also has built-in sustain like many of the Juggernauts, with the Spellvamp he is granted after the new passive given from taking Rhaast's form. He also becomes much tankier (In part thanks for the Spellvamp) thus fulfilling another of the Juggernaut tropes of being able to tank damage as well as deal it out. But he is also more mobile due to the above listed things, so if we HAVE to decisively place him in one or the other, it has to be Diver on account of his extra mobility.

Rhasst is too mobile to be a juggernaut and lack a proper in-your-face dash to be a diver. He is a Semi-tanky Skirmisher with high sustain compared to Blue-Kayn who is a assassin.

Skarner?

EbonyBladeJ881 votes

Skarner no longer falls under the Juggernaut label. Yes, I know he was one of the 4 to get something in the "Juggernaut Update" back in Season 5, but since it crashed as hard as a early aviator's plane, he's since been reclassified as a Diver.

"unavoidable kill"

that's fucking laughable because an orange or a headband can cleanse urgot ult.

Pardon my ignorance. I don't play Urgot as often as some.
