The New Player Experience

Ex Infernalis··48 votes·2,588 views

So I decided I should log in and play a few games on my unused smurf, just so his name isn't cleansed in the next wipe.

And I have to say, I feel very sorry for new players.

Out of the five games I played, there were 2-3 smurfs on each side, all flaming the new guy for being a fucking feeder, etc. On the one game we didn't have a smurf (except me) the other team had four smurfs and, naturally, we lost.

This game blows if you're new.

It's so stupid that experienced players get new accounts to play on a less experienced players level

like if you're looking for wins that way, you're scum.

If you're doing it for a good reason, like helping a friend learn and playing with them, that's great. You're not a piece of shit.

Let's put it this way:

For the time investment, much less than working literally any part time job. Likely less than even household chores for an allowance.

Most people just want to get the acc to level 30 to play ranked and grind out in normals cuz riot nerfed power leveling in Twisted Treeline custom games.

If they gave experienced players the option to start off level 30 that would be nice. BUt nope.

Agreed, most smurfs are probably sadists that enjoy "ggezpz scrubs".

Lol does a poor job teaching new players the basics. Even at level 30, people don't understand the game. I don't have any sympathy. I lost and learned like everyone else. It is what it is. Riot could fix it if they wanted to.

I agree. I don't play DOTA, but I do like their tutorial system. I think there's much to learn from that method.

It's funny because I gave both LoL and Dota2 a try in the same week, and I found Dota2's tutorial to be too much. I lost interest after the 2nd lengthy tutorial and found that I still had at least one more tutorial.

It may be longuer, but you cant squeeze all the information you need into a 5 minute tutorial.

DotA's tutorial is waaaaaaaaaay better, it's long, but it shows alot more things and not just Howling Abyss then some bot game with no explainations.

LaceUp234 votes

Lol, I'm not sure why you got downvoted. Rito's tutorial is shitty as fuck.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

What's confusing is that the OP then comes in and agrees with this guy, and the OP gets upvoted.

Yeah, the League community isn't too bright...nor do they even know what they think lol.

That and there's an afk almost literally every other game until you hit the 20s - 30

Its actually not that bad for new players because match making figures out who's smurfing and who's a noob and tries to pair smurfs together and noobs together. But ya the first few PVP matches for new players can be rough until match making figures out they're legitimate new players. Match making even in normal games still has MMR and pairs player with people of equal MMR it doesn't even factor level in just MMR. On my smurf it is level 17 and when I play alone I get placed against level 30s. lol But my friend (who is a terrible) thinks he's good because he does good in his PVP matches when he plays alone (because he's matched against people of equal skill level).

Lots of forum posts have been made about the new player experience, one of them even got like 500 upvotes and was on the very top of the boards for weeks, but Riot never even commented on it.

They dont care, theyve got their money, and their player base.

Yeah the new player experience sucks but I don't now what riot can do about that. I am guilty of smurfing because when I get my friends to try league it is no fun if I play on my main and they get stuck laning against gold/silver players when they are not even average lvl 5 players. I can't even do bot games with them on my main (unless there are 5 of us) bc some lvl 30 player looking for the first win of the day bonus will go 30/0/0 in the first 15 mins and end the game. There isn't really a good way for experienced players to play with new players. Sure if the experienced players play on their mains the game will be fair, but it will 0 fun for the noobs who may have to lane against players who are way way better or get ganked by better players. IDK what riot can do.

In custom games you can add up to 5 bots, choose their champs and skill level. I taught very basics of League to a friend this way.

The problem with that is you don't get any ip or xp for it unless you have 5 people to fill out the game. While it is a good way to learn, new players desperately want xp and ip so they unlock champs/runes/game modes/summoner spells. Therefore it is not a good option unless your friends are extremely patient/willing to spend rp on the game

Does RIOT allow 2+ accounts on one email? I don't have a smurf so I don't know.(I'm not thinking of making one, just curious)

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

Why would you make a smurf?

John JJ Schmidt1 votes

I don't mind playing against smurfs.

The better your opponent is, the more you learn, and the faster you learn it. I lose. A lot. But I learn. A lot. If I were only playing other new people who also no idea how to play their champion, I wouldn't be learning much.
