Hecarim does no damage early....

So ive played hecarim at least 45 times and what ive realized is he has absolutely no damage early game. Like its ridiculous if you go top with him because his trades are awful. Am I doing something wrong? I usually rush trinity but thats so expensive and i feel like he needs something earlier.
