Riot: solution ideas for quitters.

Obviously we all hate quitters, not because they left, but because there isn't really a solid solution (which honestly starts to shock me the more i think about it considering how often we get AFK's and Quitters) and without fail almost always leads to a 15+ minute game that just felt like a huge waste of time for everyone (a round that I personally never would have played had i known someone would have quit)

So, I propose we each throw in some solution ideas to remind Riot that while we cant fix this problem 100%-- there's GOT to be a way out there to help reduce the negative impact this problem causes to the game.

THE PROBLEM:

  1. Quitters (by quitter I mean they either straight up quit the game, or they AFK for a long enough time period (like several minutes+) to cause a loss for the ally team (due to whatever reason such as you fed, or are severely far behind or don't have enough gold to come back etc)
  2. We dont have SOME kind of backfill system in place.

A SOLUTION:

  1. Backfill (at the top of my head I see two ways to implement this)

--- When players are in QUEUE waiting to join a game, a pop-up appears saying ("Someone quit a game that's already in progress and needs you to backfill! - would you like to join? (yes / no). Upon hitting yes you will be placed into their game and use their champion at the same Lvl they were at, including using their same rune page and masteries etc etc (yes AND whatever skin they used but obviously you don't get that skin permanently). Also, you can ONLY backfill if you have that champion bought already! Meaning League knows who you have and who you dont, so it will only allow you to backfill champs that you've already earned. Again, once the game is complete obviously you do not have their rune pages or runes etc (it would be as if you never joined it in the first place). To make it fair this is purely to help random people out and you would not earn any IP ( (unless you folks feel otherwise), but I personally feel like it may complicate things by trying to calculate IP earnings.

**2. **Or, some form of compensation

-- If we don't have the option to backfill, then there has GOT to be some form of compensation that is fair for the team that lost a player. I actually dont know what would be fair TBH...but hell, maybe it could be 10% increased rate of gold per 5/sec, or maybe more IP at the end of the round ...or SOMETHING. There's got to be something we can think of (personally I like the backfill idea much more though, whether its a bot or a real person)

ALL -- please join me in jotting down some ideas, and hopefully riot will read them and say "hm, ya know what ..maybe we could add something here or there to help this problem".

Thanks,

Seth P.

Whatever your ideas are, they must not be exploitable. That's the whole reason riot doesn't do anything to aid the handicapped team yet because they don't want to encourage any form of leaving.

A bot would be bad for sure fact the enemy team would exploit it for gold, this is obvious. The idea of a back up player is good start, but still encourages others to think its OK to leave. If a player doesn't want to bother continue playing a match, they will just leave. Following up afterwards, if a team gets a back up player and they win they may even forget to report the leaver. There is a small flaw in the system of how to choose who would support in the role of a back up. I would think a separate solo back up Q system would work well for all the nice guys out there. I mean I would like to believe there is about a 1 to 1 ratio of nice guys to assholes in our community. (or a better ratio hopefully)

A in game boost for the remaining team members would be possible but again you gotta think along the lines of non-exploitable. If its a fat Stat boost, some teams might just end up flaming a player they don't like for A. B. or C. reason forcing the player to leave, to acquire said boost to win the game. If it's an inferior boost then nothing has changed the landscape for the battle. A gold over time increase sounds fair but seems it would only result in being too powerful or not impacting the match. This is hard one and needs thought.

However you are right something should be possible to fix this problem. Even if its a little band aid like adding the surrender option pre 20 minutes after a player DCs for more than X amount of time.

Feel free to critique anything here just ramblings of a dude with thoughts.

Here's the issue - simply having one would encourage leavers.

"You're lousy with X, leave so we can get a new player" "You suck, just leave the game so we can get Y"

Not sure if the tradeoff is worth it, but I'm guessing that's why such a system isn't being worked on.

I really wish the "mercy" system could be implemented, but it appears as though that will never happen. For those who are not familiar, mercy means that if you outnumber the enemy team when you win, a mercy vote is called before going to the postgame screen, reducing the amount of lost LP for players who stayed and preventing that game from counting as a loss if in a series.

The link below does a better job of explaining. Plus, it has red comments.

I thought it would be neat if they had something like a "summoner's crystal" which just goes into one of the lanes and holds it vs minions - it will just zap the minions to keep the wave from pushing and has an aoe slow+self speed buff so it will run at the first sign of opponents and killing it gives like 40gp

I dont think we need compensation because it all evens out in the end...the afker can be on the other team just as easy.

What i would like is more serious punishments for it....a long queu time is not enough....how about a one day ban or something like it. Make it enough so people stop and think.

Every time you leave a game you get a champion taken away and you have to buy them back lol

"Hey, would you like to play a game that someone left because he was already losing?"

"Sure, why not?" [zombie-brand-facepalm]

Backfill as a system could work only if the guy that left the game wasn't that behind and was forced to leave the game for a legitimate reason (his internet died, blackout, there was an emergency and he had to leave, ecc...), but there's no way you can know that for sure! Also, you don't know if the guy is ever coming back. Then what happens? He can't play with his account because someone else has already joined the game he left?

And please, don't even mention bots. Bots are way dumber than people and, if the bot started feeding the enemy carries, you would probably be pissed too, because he doesn't answer to communication: he doesn't know which lane he should be supposed to defend, he doesn't know when it's time to push, he doesn't know how to group for dragon or baron, he doesn't know whom should he focus during a fight, he doesn't even know when he has to go back because he's going to die!

Backfill is simply a really bad idea, that's why it's never been implemented in game! Team buffs like "more hp to your towers" or "more natural gold gen" or "more pushing power to your minions" would be nice, but are they fair? Does the enemy team have to be penalized because you have an afk on your team?

Your backfill idea gets wierd when we're talking about ranked games. Do you get the same lp and mmr change for a win or a loss as the player that left would have gotten? What promos, do you win or lose a promo match while backfilling? Can you go up or down a tier while backfilling? What about mastery points, do you get mastery points while backfilling - and if you do, does it calculate mastery from the performance before you came into the game? Can you get firsts win of the day from backfilling? Are you allowed to leave a game that you are backfilling? What happened if someone leaves and then has many people come in and take over and leave in one game? Would that cause a massive sink in the lp system from all the extra people that may have lost lp during one match? If the backfill players don't have their rank changed from backfilling, what keeps them from playing it like a normals game and not giving a fuck?

other idea could be making bots smarter and making them fill the spot. giving the bot a level of "skill" according to each elo or just augmented stats (or just defenses), accordingly
