Ranked System and LP

Preamble: After giving ranked a somewhat more serious go this season, I finally reached gold, however I have some major issues with this LP system. It took my 70-ish games to reach gold from unranked, so I know my ELO score is still probably fluctuating with a higher variance, but I think the whole LP system is bad, especially when it comes to promotions.

Issues: The promotions require you to have a 2/3 win streak, or 3/5 for tier jump. That's a 66% win rate or 60% win rate, however the whole point of MMR is go place you at around a 50% win rate, and if you're doing well, you'll be up around 51-55%, very well 55-60%. On top of that, the system matches you with people who are your ELO, so I've been playing vs golds as a silver player ever since I skipped to silver 2 from silver 4. When I'm matched against a team of silvers, the game seems to go very easily. Thus, if someone is in a certain ELO, that should be their division. None of this promotion nonsense. Just like starcraft 2 does (did.. haven't played in a while).

A completely other issue is this... people in their gold promotions suffer from serious trolling or complete apathy (which is more likely). Often a sour teammate will on purpose sabotage the game. And even if they don't, I noticed most golds who are already set in their ways don't try at all or care that you are in your promos, and will surrender etc since it's meaningless to them. As a silver player trying to promote, you should be matched with other silvers near promotion, or golds fighting off demotion. Again, the whole stress of promotion could be avoided with a better system using a more transparent system (0-1200 ELO bronze, 1200-1400 silver, etc etc). I guess they are trying to avoid people bouncing between boundary points, which can be resolved by creating many sub divisions, and only change it when the standard deviation is fully underneath or fully above the threshold. Just some thoughts.

I know this is meaningless to most people in even higher elo, but for lower elo people fighting to promote to gold it would make the ranked system a lot more enjoyable.

Nah bro, the league system works great. If you deserve to be higher rating you will get a higher rating. It is really that simple. The issue arises with how impatient people are. If you are not insanely better than your opposition it will take longer to climb the ladder. People get mad if they lose multiple promotion series in a row but that is just their fault for even bothering to keep track of it.

Getting promoted to gold shouldn't be easy. You lower elo people should have to work hard to get it and it should not come quickly. If it were easy then what would even be the point of having the ranked system?

My smurf account started ranked at silver 5. I climbed it to gold in about a week. When I lost a promotion series I didn't care at all because I would just win the next one. It was not a chore nor did it take a long time to accomplish. The reason for that is because I am a diamond level player and deserve to be a higher rating. Since you are just barely a gold level player, of course it is going to be hard to get there and it is a good thing that it is.

also, you are being way too short sighted with your numbers. If you have a 55% winrate over 100 games, statistically the odds of you winning 2 games in a row (normal promos) is huge with many instances of it occuring. 3 wins in a row is a little less likely but still occurs multiple times in those 100 games.

Now that is literally just winning the games in a row. You don't even have to do that to win a promo series. You can win lose win. The statistical likelihood of that occuring is so mind boggling huge that it shocks me you didn't realize the fault in your logic.

Winning 2 of 3 being 66% equating to a 66% win rate is just mathematically wrong. I mean, you need to win 1/3 or worse to lose your promo so if you're doing any better than 33% win rate by your logic you'll make it through!

Correct mathematics says your chance of promotion is P×P + 2×P×P×(1-P)

Where p is your probability of winning. You'll notice at p=50% you have a 50% chance of winning your promo.

I agree that you should be matched by your Tier and not your mmr. Mmr shouldn't be used foranything other than skipping divisions / moving you to the right spot faster. It's silly to say a silver 1 hasn't earned gold 5 because they can't win 3/5 against gold 3s. That said, after a few tries you'll either succeed or you'll fail enough that your mmr drops to silver 5 levels, which kind of means this is a moot point.

You probably shouldn't advertise you're in promos. No one cares. They want to win too, they'll do what's best for themselves regardless of your position. Saying you're in promos will only stress them out if anything, or possibly invite jealous trolls.

you have to win 2 of 3, not lose less than 2 of 3, there is a distinction. yes your odds of promotion using probability show you have a 50-50 chance of promotion, which is representative of each game you play you could have a 50% win rate, which is already expected. however your win rate needed is still 2 of 3 at minimum, which is different than playing n games over a period of time and promoting to your rightful rank which is what i was talking about

  1. if you read what I wrote you'll notice I said I already promoted. them changing the system would only benefit other people
