What's the general consensus on the state of Riven?

I've played Riven for a really long time and currently it just feels like nearly every other top laner beats Riven quite easily. It seems as though quite a few high elo Riven mains feel the same way so I'm just curious how Riot feels about her state right now. I know they haven't forgotten about her because the keep adding to her lore. Does Riot think that she's in a good spot right now balance-wise or in need of some help?

shes good if you are good, so for the average boards mage main, that would be a no.

Riven takes both mechanical and mental skill, most players have one or the other, the best players have both. Riven requires the best players...

Riven probably has the steepest mastery curve out of any champion in the game, and that will probably remain the case forever unless Riot wishes to address it.

In the general sense, Riven is probably a B or even C-tier top laner, but in the hands of someone who's dedicated 200+ games on her, I gather that is not the case. The issue is Riven's overall power is directly linked to how well the player piloting her is able to weave AA animation-cancels in her combos. The difference between someone who is able to pull it off and someone who can't will result in Riven either dealing not enough damage to trade evenly in lane, or straight-up one-shotting her opponent.

Obvious example, but people like Adrian (and a few others) are still able to carry themselves to Challenger using Riven, so clearly she is viable in the hands of people who can wield her correctly. The issue is that the skill curve to learn her is just way too steep. If Riot ever wants to buff her numbers to the point where she's meta she'll be completely busted in the hands of people who mastered her.

She's not particularly good right now, no.

Mediocre win rate with mediocre play rate. Pretty mediocre champ atm. Please note "mediocre" does not mean "weak and needs buffs". She's in an ok spot. Problem with maining one champ is that everyone always focuses on how they were at the peak of their strength and aren't happy if they aren't at that peak. Sorry people, your champ can't be at that peak all the time. That doesn't mean they need buffs

I don't think shes in the worst place ever tbh. Don't get me wrong she's no adc, but when compared to the current state of malz, elise, lissandra, morde... yeah she's not got much to complain about.

Riven is one of the best carry toplaners

Having said that avoid picking her when the enemy team has knockbacks, lulu, jayce, ranged cancers

She didnt even need a relativly recent buff which increased her W stun duration and made it even more difficult to trade back

She is like, playable, but you may still see people complaining because she is frustrating to play against

I think your best chances of getting an official answer is asking on the next "Quick Gameplay thoughts" post in the Dev Corner.

Her problems stem mostly from how much more tanks can provide to their team. While she can kill some tanks in lane, there are other tanks who can also kill her in lane easily. Even if she kills her tank opponent a few times in lane, the tank will be able to do more for their team than Riven can.
