Garen's Ultimate

Garen is a pub stomper at low elo's but loses his effectiveness as a champion after the gold ranks with much more viable picks. My question is, would Garen be more viable as a pick if his ultimate had bonus effect if he failed to kill? His animation shows a huge light sword piercing the target, so how about if he fails to kill or uses his ulti on someone below 50% HP it would stun the target or snare it for 1/2/3 seconds. How viable would he be then?

Lets face it, Garen has really been at a low to mid range play since league started. has very little mobility and his silence is good but nothing spectacular. His ultimate is dulled greatly by just one mag resist item, and he's a solid tank but provides no real reason to be focused. I think if you added this conditioned required snare/stun effect his viability will be pretty good.

Idk I think Garen should be punished for underestimating his ultimate and letting his target slip away.

I'd sooner see him rewarded with a lower CD for successfully executing rather than failing to do so.

Also there's still the problem that hexdrinker completely nullifies his ult damage at most reasonable amounts of hp remaining.

I love Garen, I love me some Demacian Justice and I'm totally fine with the way he is.

I'll be honest with you though, it doesn't really make sense to put bonus effects on an ability that's designed as an execute. Because then you're fighting with yourself deciding when to use the ult, should I use it to snare them or save it when they can be executed? Garen doesn't need a snare, he breaks slows and has a MS boost on his Q.

to me thats the point, Darius gets resets on kills. I feel Garen being a soilder for Demacia should have more of an option. It's like do I wait till I can just kill the target if I can even get in the range, or would it be better to go in an snare for a sure kill with my team? My main problem is, that so many champions just do his job better. He needs something more unique and yet effective. all this change really does is give him one more option for a gank or a team fight. outside of that there isn't much besides maybe an extra escape.

I understand what you're getting at, Garen's simple. He is designed to be simple. He'll never have a high skill cap and you know what? I'm totally ok with that. He gets the job done as he is now.

He becomes an unkillable force in the mid to late game with the passive and active effects of his W. Perseverance combined with a spirit visage is unreal, add in a Warmog's and you're good to go. That last change they made to him gave him exactly what he needed. He's not there to lock down opponents, that's what you've got your threshes, leonas, etcs for. He's there to soak damage for your team, make clutch interrupts to channels (ex Kat ults) and execute squishy/high priority targets. You start giving him more CC and he's going to need to take a hit elsewhere.

Honestly, he does his job just fine. He isn't popular because he's binary, he's simple. Like I said, he's simple by design. I think it was said somewhere else in this thread. He doesn't make flashy plays. He runs up to you, spins and executes. Rinse and repeat. Nothing real flashy about that. (Even though that ultimate is gorgeous every time I see it.)

To me, the concept of using an execute to snare somebody is just plain silly. I'm not saying this to be rude, I just don't think it makes sense. You used your ultimate to snare an opponent so you could catch up to them. Well now you've got no ultimate for when the rest of their team shows up, so your damage output drops like a rock. You have little to no kill potential.

And I hear this argument all the time that other champions do his job better, who can regen health, tank, silence and execute better than Garen? There may be champions who do some of those things better, but not all in the same kit. I Garen-tee it.

I understand you wanting to add more to him to give him more options, but he really doesn't need more options. He's got all he needs. Demacian Justice, baby.

Dude they stated trillion times that Garen is not "muh lzs plays" champ and is kept weak on intention for newer players.

And the playerbase who plays Garen repeatedly says they want Garen to be so much more. It's a cycle that will only end when League ends or when Garen get's changed.

I really dont think this would make him a huge top tier pick, I think it would only make him more viable and he would keep his fairly easy to use kit for newer players. it would just be a slight skill cap increase which isn't much really because you just need to hit a target below 50%. Now had I made it stuns no matter what it would make him even easier to play don't ya think?

A cooldown reduction would be nice if he doesn manage to kill his target. I was thinking more like, when he ults, his sword pierces his target. Garen loses his sword, but if he manages to kill his target in "x" amount of time then he gets a reduction on his ult. Might make him easier to snowball easier. You could make it so his ult does less damage and his abilities get bonus stats for that "x" amount of time he has to kill his target after he uses his ult.

I guess I fall into the silver bracket at the moment, but Garen is actually a pretty good split-pusher. I've had a lot of success building him full tank with a Zz'Rot portal. He's pretty hard to remove from lane, and the Zz'Rot helps him push pretty hard.

think it'd be nice if they made his ult a non-channel, nothing more annoying then "Failing" the ult when you see it's animation play/hear the sound butthe enemy runs into a bush or flashes before the channel ends and you fail it.

kinda shocked that most think with this change he would be mid tier. I would at least give him highly viable. if the effect could be applied at any amount of health I think he'd be top tier OP lol.

I actually think that IF the ult kills it's target, it should do AOE splash damage to everyone around the target.

This way, he has more incentive to use it as an execute, and loses out on alot of extra damage if he miss-times it.

Just giving his ult a cc would ruin it, and would take away counterplay.
