GANGPLANK does not need a FULL rework.

Aunuxa··17 votes·2,339 views

I Honesty do not think Gangplank needs a full rework. He my main. He got me to gold. I love him. What he needs is a little love in the form of higher early game stats, his E to not require him to stop moving in order to cast, and his passive to be increased to 5 stacks instead of 3. These are some easy changes that do not require a year or two like a full rework would require. The only way a Full rework would be justified is if the made him Pirate King.

His passive and E need reworked. Everything else is fine.

And his W. It was made for a different age, we can definitely do better than "Heal + cleanse" now.

Honestly I think oranges should be left the same. He can either use it to heal from damage or clear a CC.

I think the reason riot tries to keep him weaker is because his passive is a Permaslow and his E is really nothing but stats. I do like the idea of Gangplank inflicting a poison on his opponents when he attacks them, but it can't have a slow attached to it. As for his W.... they could make it more interactive than just "hey press this to cleanse and heal".

gangplank passives is exactly what everybody needs against the tyranny of speedy champions ;l and even then its not a very good solution..

I agree. Without Q, W, or R, he wouldn't be Gangplank.

and the animations on his abilities are too long. if they could be faster or shorter that would be nice.

They have specifically stated that he will have oranges for sure.

His ultimate should drop oranges

The new animation on cannon barrage is kinda unnatural it would be nice if GP could get the old animation back, as long as each ball hits everyone in the zone.

Sachabot2 votes

His kit is kinda....underwhelming. Not weak, but we can do better. He's just old, really. Some QoL as you suggested, maybe a better Raise Morale.

Gangplank will get a rengar sized rework, and let me tell you why. NOT THAT I AGREE WITH THIS STANCE, BUT THE FOLLOWING IS RIOT LOGIC.

Passive: The slow from this will probably be removed/Moved. Stacking on-hit slow is toxic because it's useless when behind, and punishing when ahead (enemy has difficulty escaping.)

Q: This will probably be changed to a skill shot, but have almost all aspects of it buffed. (Like rengar's bola change.) Q as it is now can only be overpowered or underpowered because it's high damage targeted harass.

W: This probably won't be changed much since it's GP's signature ability. If anything, they will change to to be %missing health heal because Riot has constant lane sustain because it removes incentive for interaction.

E: This will be completely reworked, because like Warwick's attack speed buff, it gives a lot of "hidden power" while not having any interesting gameplay behind it. Riot will probably put SOMETHING with a speed buff here though.

R: This will either keep it as it is now, OR just make it even less random. Other than that, they will probably leave his ult alone.

Sounds right. GP's kit today really suffers from being oppressive when ahead, useless when behind, and probably they are going to repair that.

Targeted Q is definitely gone. No chance that's staying.

I do expect a small edit to W; making it scale with %missing HP is a good game health change.

I think E is a really janky button. I hate that my move speed increase makes me stop moving.

I will flip tables if R changes. That's the most fun thing in his kit.

Messaiga2 votes

I imagine his R will stay the same. Global Presence is a nice part of his kit at the moment, it also keeps AP GP alive, and it's not RNG either (the ability does damage throughout the whole AOE now).

I respect you for liking Gangplank, but the truth of the matter is that Gangplank has a lot in his kit that offers a lot of power without a lot of gameplay. When he gets his inevitable rework, everything that makes Gangplank, Gangplank will stay, and everything that doesn't make him what he is will get removed, and replaced with something that makes him even more fun to play.

If I could guess, his Remove Scurvy and his Cannon Barrage would definitely stay, and his Parrrley would probably stay in some form, although it is very likely it may have some sort of changes to it. Passive and Raise Morale may also get changes so that the former isn't a weak permaslow and the latter isn't a stat stick with a cast time.

I dont know if People realize but Gangplanks passive use to have 5 stacks and it used to hit harder but it was so bad in top lane and coming out of the jungle that people were screaming for nerfs.

Keep in mind that getting gold is hardly an achievement. Remember that Riot remade the ranking system to be more accomodating and that being gold now is really just achieving silver.

I say this as a gold (silver of old) myself.

With that being said, you do sort of have a point. But I think the crux of the issue here is that Gangplank has never in his entire life span been a balanced champion. In the past, his viability relied entirely on how hard he can cheese just a single crit with his Q.

And his Passive, while interesting, could really do with some scaling.

cFlame2 votes

Riot has probably forgotten Gankplank if they got the nerve to release Yasuo, a directly better version of him and another huge counter to Gankplank. (Get knocked up, its NOT ok.) Since Yasuo can just ignore his Q if hes low and run off with no cooldown dash because its apparently predictable to the enemies or something. Another thing is, where Gankplank might be synergized with his E and R for his role when ganking another lane, Yasuo doesn't stray from being a crit carry and just adds on with his ultimate. I know I'm gonna get hate and all, but these new champions feel like clones of older champions, even if they're lore is different the play style is the same, just makes more sense in comparison to the older ones.

DrCyanide1 votes

Agreed, a few more QoL changes would probably be enough to get him into a great spot.

Live for More1 votes

Hell, his ultimate could benefit from some buffs, too. Maybe some AD scaling, or damage applying his passive? Definitely agree with your ideas. They could also change Remove Scurvy to breathing fire whiskey or something. That'd be pirate-y.

For QoL A lot of ppl would like: Remove Scurvy to heal CC and provide 50% crowd control reduction for 10 sec. Change Cannon Barrage so that it does the base damage + 20% ad + 20% AP for each cannonball Make parrley give 8/9/10/11/12 extra gold if it kills something.

10 seconds of 50% CC reduction on a non-ultimate ability? I assume this change will come out the same time they decide to delete Olaf from the roster.

how about allowing his Q to do magic damage like i heard it used to when he was released since gangplank can't fit a last whisper in easily with being really squishy.

Gangplank needs more than average changes, but not a rework. Those that like him like him because of his current kit ALTHOUGH I personally wished he had a different E than just "Buff me and my allies with better stats."

WutsKraken1 votes

Actually I think he's fine in terms of early-game base stats it feels that his stats are rather poor later on. Anyway, his current passive's weak outside of lvl 1-2 cheese, cast-times on his abilities are pretty sad, and...maybe some other QoL changes but that's what comes to mind here

I thought he was the pirate king.

As a Gangplank main myself, I still disagree. His Q will never be balanced the way it currently is. His E is extremely powerful but extremely underwhelming to use. And don't get me started on his passive, that is never going to fly. A perma-slow on an auto attack with no mana cost is pretty toxic, even on a champion that is primarily melee.

FatesDefiler1 votes

every change riot's ever made to the game has been to shoehorn and straitjacket the game into the adc-centric meta that it is. every rework, every item removal, literally every change they've made to the game in any way has been to lead us to this glorious state of 3/4's hp damage taken off from one late-game adc's auto-attack.

gangplank is a character that could possibly, through extremely talented play, disrupt this carefully protected adc powered meta occasionally. like kayle, jax, trynd, and also plank's previous incarnation that was already removed from adc threat potential, it must be done for the good of the game. it's not enough that his ult might as well be a team-wide purple caster minion attack, nerf him to the ground! all hail the eternal reign of the all-powerful adc and riot's infallible balance team!

Darth Valer1 votes

I agree his changes should mostly regard his E and passive, although I'd like a compromise between the fun he provides and the competitiveness he can enact. He should still have means to stick to his targets, since completely depriving a toplaner of CC (except for his ult) looks a bit like killing him (I've tried Shyvana and I DON'T like her, mostly for this reason u.u). I'd like if his E could give him some form of lane or 1v1 power, since it mostly look like a blank spot on your HUD until later in the game, where it still lacks fun and playability (the E movement speed boost, though, is really appreciated since it allows me - unlike most Gp players, I realize - to ignore boots during itemization). His W and R are fine. I'd like them to be buffed, but I realize that would probably be unbalanced and only out of my affection for the charachter xD (his W, though, is getting worse with each new champ with knocks and airborne CC). Last but not least, the Q. The most popular installation of the Champ, Critplank, sees Q as a crit-chance based hyper-poke ability. Crit-based champs like Tryndamere , Yasuo (and Shaco ...?) have in-kit means to enhance their crit reliability, either with Trynd's rage, Yasuo's passive or Shaco's Q. With GP, instead, you merely rely on your base crit-chance and have to make huge investments in it. Full-crit builds make him extremely squishy and no W is ever going to save you from a little bit of focus in TFs (not to mention the lack of dash/blinks the aforementioned champs have). It would be nice if they found a way to keep Critplank fun as hell yet somehow less random-based.

Aunuxa1 votes

I was thinking that either his passive stack could also increase his crit chance on that target for gp only. An other alternative could be the more GP kills creeps with his Q it increases the crit chance for it.

Feathermane1 votes

He has a boring kit, like Nunu, Taric, old Sion, Warwick. If anyone needs a rework, these guys do (did).
