Am I understanding guides and there "auto" attack correctly

I have been reading a bunch of guides on some characters I'm looking to get better with (Fiora and Riven as two examples) and I'm seeing in some of the recommend attack sequences there are specifically mentioned auto attacks. For example for Riven Q - Auto - Q - Auto (not necessarily this just an example). My question is: Are you supposed to literally wait for an auto attack to complete in some characters instead of just spamming the ability?

those usually refer to abilities that cancel the attack animation...if you do it right e.g. you can get q-aa-q-aa-q done with riven in the time it takes to just q-q animation-wise. more popular (and ultimatly not former bug-exploits) uses of such mechanics are aa-resets like e.g. a-q-a on leona, the sort of famous instant-ward-kill.
