the problem here is not the abusive players. there are rare cases where the rager actually is truly abusive. the problem with league of legends is the ego of some players and how soft some player are. actually i would say most of them. if you give them advice or comment on their play on what they should do better. they will lash out at your or completely give you the cold shoulder. while this may seem like not a big deal for video games, it is in moba. moba is team base, but so is CoD right? well you do know rage there, but lol its much worse. why? because unlike CoD, you can single handedly carry a match. in CoD i can literally get all the kills for my team and have my team do literally nothing. when a person carrys a team in league of legends, they will typically have a lot of kills for their team, die very little, but even then, they will require the cooperation and somewhat competence of their team. teamwork is an absolute must. so why is this a problem. the problem is a clashing of culture and game genre that causes the rage. we have a culture of wanting to carry the team. wanting the best out and for ourselves. glorify the 1 man army. we are also very narcissistic. in typical games where there is raging, its not usually just because someone did horribly. its usually that coupled with other things. heres a list:

  • not admitting they did wrong and refusing to play better
  • purposely not caring about the team
  • ego gets hurt by criticism so they decide to feed the game
  • giving teammates cold shoulder and not listen when given advice
  • losing a game, but refusing to listen to the leadership of the teammate who is carrying your team
  • not paying attention to the game
  • not knowing or acting on expected behavior (strictly for rank or max level games; i assure you the expectations are not high as long as you are willing to learn)

im not going to list anymore but you get the idea. we in the lol community will not get furious with you if you are just a bad player. what we would suggest is that maybe you should practice more in coop vs ai or in normal games (depending where you are in the game). however whenever we suggest this, the players take it as an insult. were not trying to make you feel bad because we dont like you. we know you feel bad, but there is nothing to feel good about doing poorly in a game (especially rank games). but there is something you can do about it. we did it to get better and now so can you.

the other issue is timing. this game isnt extremely fast pace like CoD. but we do need to pay attention and be ready for anything at anytime because ppl can jump out of the shadows and attack you. when we do say things to players, even when just offering advice, we dont say things like "Dam that really sucks that you got killed. Let me help you. You should not push your lane that much when you are getting beat." first of all its a long type. we dont have time for those in games. but we will give you the gist of what you need to know. "just turrent hug" and thats it. typically because it is a shorter sentence, it will sound like an imperative. and in sometimes, we do want it to be like a command. its not because we want to control your ever action or want to make you feel bad. its because we want to change the pace of the game ASAP. league is a very snowbally game. well MOBAs are snowbally. once someone gets into a lead they will keep going. and you can stop it, but once the snowball gets too big, its very tough and almost impossible. so basically what i want to make a point about is that we use imperatives when communicating advice because its easier and time efficient. we may make a lot of comments and typing a whole sentence to caress your ego should not be necessary. you may be asking "well do you really need to make all these comments? why are you so arrogant? why dont you stop typing and just play the game". its not about arrogance. WE ARE A TEAM. we come into a game to win. who doesnt want to win. its a common goal. nobody says "oh lets go into a game so we can lose". makes no sense right. as a team, there needs to be cooperation and communication. while pings tell ppl where to go, words are more accurate when describing more complex stuff like builds and strategies. im not arrogant. i know certain things about the game, but im not sure you do. im not going to throw this game to risk so i will tell you what i am thinking we need to do better on. ideally you would either follow or give feedback. the problem is, lots of ppl are sensitive about their game or too casual about it and just either dont care or take it as an insult when its not meant as an insult.

now it sounds too biased right. well thats because it is. the usual rager isnt always like this, not even usually. not to say this attitude is rare for ragers. there are times we get mad and frustrated about the current situation of the team and the reasons for it. other times when we give advice, there is a hint of frustration. "wtf did you do that for; omfg you should of just walked away; he obviously had back up; why dont you listen to pings". notice it isnt something like "omfg you suck fucken balls; go and uninstall this game you are just dam bad; go fuck yourself you noob". the latter is just simply non-sensical rage. the first does show strong frustation. the other player got killed because he got overly cocky, thought he could engage the fight and refused to listen to his teammates. maybe he didnt notice the pings. both situations are bad. like i said its a team game. not a team game like CoD where you just have a team. its a team game like basketball where you can be good, but ultimately you really need cooperation of your team. refusing to listen to teammates a lot and making mistakes because of it is really frustrating because your teammates is doing all he can do help the team win. hes doing his part and trying to help others on their part. but he cant do the second without cooperation. not noticing pings is a different story, but still very bad (well depending on what lvl of games you are playing; low lvls are not expected to be as adept). by the time you are playing rank games and lvl 30 games, you should notice the pings. they are loud high pitch sounds and there is large marker for it. 0 reason you should miss this. its very frustrating to play against ppl who did not learn the things they are expected to learn. think of hiring a programming developer who doesnt know how to debug in the language he is hired for our cant do the basics expected of the language. for the team, that is frustration.

the other reason for frustration is time again. lol games can last a very long time to 40-50 min. thats lot of time commitment and when you are playing with someone who is just feeding on your team or not cooperating with the team and you are trying your best to help the team win the game, its very frustrating and unfair. at the very least if you guys are going to lose, you guys should do it while trying to actually win. otherwise you are reduce to sitting there for about an hour clicking around and really doing nothing significant. if you quit the game you can be banned so you dont want to do that. your team can vote to surrender the game, but you need a 4/5, 3/4, 2/3 vote in favor to actually accomplish that. too often you are in a game where you know its almost impossible to win and want to save time by surrendering and starting a new game. cut your losses because you seen the trend of this game from previous failing games. but the vote wont go through and they wont surrender and now you are playing a game where the enemy slowly destroys you and every team fight is a easy beat down for them. the only reason they dont take the win is because they are enjoying themselves slaughtering you and your stubborn teammates. you cant surrender the game until 20min and thats a very long time. its almost playing a game of battlefield conquest mode and you are forced in the entire hell. it can end quicker than 20 if enemy team takes the nexsus before that, but you cant just sit in the base or purposely feed because then you will get banned.

so you notice that i dont deny there is rage in league of legends. sometimes its actual rage, sometimes its just imperatives that is perceived by rage. but the rage isnt typically because they want to bring someone down. they want the team to come together. they want their teammates to play better. ppl just want to win. MOBA genre is a competetive genre and ppl do invest a lot of time into one game. there are going to be wins and losses, but if your going to lose, at least lose trying. and trying doesnt mean just staying in the game. cause staying in the game is easy. trying mean requiring effort. the effort to come up with a game plan. the effort to improve your game and change your play. the effort to cooperate. the effort to communicate. the effort to evaluate different strategies. what i want to tell you is about the real toxic players. not these ragers. yea they get mad, but for good reason. riot wants to just get rid of them through eradication. through bans. these ppl who report ragers will become ragers themselves one day. they just havnt reached that level of play or understanding of the game. bans isnt solving the real toxicity in the game. the real toxic players are those that are apathetic and dont care. those whose egos are too large to take in advice to improve their play. those who dont want to improve their play in general or during game. those that dont want to cooperate with their teammates. those who purposely trying to make the team lose by not cooperating with the team and splitting off. those are the real toxic players.

"As of 11/13/2014, 95% of active players in 2014 have never received a punishment of any kind. The vast majority of you have not received chat restrictions, ranked restrictions, game bans or permanent bans this year!"

If I were to say that police officers only pull over 5% of drivers every year for speeding, would you tell me that the other 95% aren't speeding at all?

Of course not.

So in that same way, this statistic is meaningless. It could definitely mean that only 5% of active players commit offenses that require punishment. But it could just as easily mean that of all the players, only 5% have been punished.
