For a champion with no real weakness outside of ganks, Gnar shouldn't have all that sustain.
I understand how to lane against him (trust me Ive had plenty of practice), you try to have a gap closer to abuse his hyper form and don't let him touch you in his mega form. However there is an immense problem with laning against him and it has nothing to do with being ranged, doing max heath hp magic dmg, or even having a state where fighting him is suicide. The actual problem with Gnar is that while having those advantages, he also benefits from having periodic free health, due to his passive.
Now I understand the need for it, boosting him up so that he can actually function as intended; however there is no reason why he keeps the health. This means that harassing his mini form is meaning less since he also has the disengage to stop an all in if brought low enough. Not only that but he also doesn't have to worry about mana meaning he can stay in lane forever as long as he can build passive.
I'm kind of fed up with playing better than the enemy Gnar and it not meaning anything because I cant actually do anything with any outplay or lead. And if that turns you away I'm not saying I'm a god, I'm saying gnar doesn't need to preform correctly in order to succeed due too all of the safety nets, If he buys pots you sit in lane farming with him until he is inevitably more useful in team fights than you are.
-Ill be transparent here and just out and say I absolutely hate Gnar and as far as I am concerned he is the digital representation of how riot doesn't care about top lane, as he is a ranged hyper keepaway character that is also a tank that does damage like a fighter. Good design. But I honestly feel like I wouldn't even mind laning against him if he didn't retain the bonus health, at least not permanently. (perhaps make it decay?) I just want to feel like anything I do against him matters and that beating him in lane is possible without a stroke involved.
is very similar to
, given viability and team fight relevance. They both have extremely uninteractive lanes an no real way to capitalize on mistakes/advantages.
