Support starting items need to change (again)

So in the preseason Riot plans to remove mana potions and increase the price of health potions, presumably to keep laners from abusing the sustain they get from a flask+ potion start. This change doesn't happen in a vacuum however, as mana and health potions are just as much, If not more important to supports, specifically poking supports.

As you can probably tell, the meta has been dominated by tank supports in the past couple of months. The relic shield line of items offers very strong sustain for botlane duos in addition to their innate resistances. This means poking supports like Vel'koz, Zyra and Karma need to rely on mana pots to win the sustain wars against duos with tank supports. Playing passive in the early game is not a valid option for most of these guys, as they don't posess the kill threat of a tank support, nor the defenses Janna or Soraka can provide for their marksmen. Unless they can at least threaten the enemy with the damage of their spells, a competent enemy bottom lane can and will zone their adc away from farm, or shove their lane in to make farming harder and poking futile.

If Riot goes through with the planned changes for the preseason without at least slightly altering the mana regen on support items, I'm afraid poke supports may become a thing of the past. I am aware of Riot's plans to buff the mana regen stat of some of the mana hungry mages to compensate for the removal of mana pots, but I'm afraid those changes just won't cut it for their bottom lane counterparts because of the higher sustain and tankiness of their opponents they need to combat.

Of course, this is all just speculation on my part; Riot may already have changes to the support items for the preseason, or the health potion changes could be a substantial nerf to bottom lane sustain in general.

I don't think they'll need to entirely change the mana regen of support items. I mean, remember when they changed how mana region as a stat works? They can use that little tool that they made way back when for themselves now.
