Feels pretty bad knowing you have to queue fill(support) to avoid 10+ minute queue times...in silver

No idea what you guys over in NA have problems with. Here in EUW I queue for mid/jungle and get into a lobby after an average of 3 minutes.

Well, I'm pretty sure that the problem isn't that you have to fill in support to not have huge queue times that's a big problem. I think that it is more likely that lots of people make it unbearable to support in low elo. From what I heard, no one wants to play support because it is a thankless job in low ELO; everyone uses support as the scapegoat, and if the team is doing bad or if bot is lost, clearly it's always the support for not playing right or warding enough.

tl;dr; everyone loves to blame Support/Jg and then flame them

I'm not saying that you personally do this. I'm just relaying things I've heard from friends who like support but won't support in low ELO.

I'm a support main who is thinking about going into ranks. I'm pretty sure I'll place Silver / Bronze, but the things that I mentioned make me really reconsider.

I bet it's due to the fact that Riot coded the queue to make it so that premades avoid being paired up with solo players. And because of the rise in the usage of ranked premades, it has effectively split the community up once again. Thanks Rito.

This 10 min queue number seems a bit exaggerated. The highest times I get are 5 mins, even then at 3 mins restarting the queue gets me into a game nearly instantly

Being a support main, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Silver 3, no queue is ever longer than 3 minutes, even in the middle of the night. Usually Top/Jungle queue, occasionally Mid replaces one of them.
