Can't mages have more fun with builds?

Just pure damage. Nothing else pretty much. If you happen to be a DOT mage a optional Liandries. I'm complaining not because of my build is underpowered compared to the new AD items. It is unfun and CREATES unfun into the game. There are some major problems.

  1. Voidstaff. What makes this a "prime" build is that there is no other option for mages to actually get their damage through tanks aside from %pen from void staff so it is ALWAYS a must build. BUT it also gives mages the ability to burst carries harder which makes it THE most overpowered item in this build. Make a item DEDICATED to tank busting. (Like a balanced version of DFG that marks a target with a bonus MR shred debuff.)

  2. The mage start core item is overloaded to the extreme. It gives you mana, it gives you cooldown, it gives you kiting potential AND burst??? Weren't these elements of stats separated around season 4-5? Why is it slapped on one item, and buying it makes you a fully armed and operational battle station? Just separate the stats, and add new invented unique effects!

  3. Cooldown standards are EXTREMELY lower compared to the primetime of league. 40% is the norm. Midlane duels are now officially URF. Waveclearing champions can permanently waveclear and poke champs can spam without the fear of missing. League around season 4-5 had cooldowns that were commonly 20%. Now you can nuke a enemy midlaner after like 20 seconds he is back in lane over and over. There is no playing around this. if one wins a kill over the other, it quickly devolves into a arms race of which one can spam their ult. (God forbid if Syndra ever becomes viable with this system. Oh wait. it already happened in 2017 where she did this for half a year and everyone caught ebola with that death toll. Now she is now balanced around 47% winrate in plat. Damn)

you say this like every single class in the game isn't the same in which they have ONE build path that is considered good/viable. Sorry but mages aren't the only one with these issues and until AP items actually get some form of way to separate them from each other, other than "this one has mana and this one doesn't" nothing will change whatsoever

The meta is meta because it works. There's no rule saying you can't break it, it's just that it's not a very good idea to break it. It's the same for other roles. most games are like that. if you want to mess around you can just buy anything that have AP on it and adjust your play style accordingly. but, if you want to play optimally then you need to purchase according to what's needed for you situation. That's the whole point of itemization. you can't just build whatever you want and still expect it to be competitive. i can give you 10 other items with zhyonya active effects with slight differences on other stats. The players will still find one to be meta and say "if you want to go for damage then this is the one you always buy".
