Tips on getting an S with Kat?

I realized a few weeks ago that Kat was my highest mastery champion (on my main) and decided to play something other than ARAM/ARURF so I could focus on that. Here are my last 13 Kat games (most recent first), "WL, grade, K/D/A, CS/minutes":

W, A+, 24/5/8, 166/37 W, B-, 5/4/1/87, 87/20 W, S-, 22/2/3, 143/29 W, B+, 8/3/3, 92/22 W, S-, 15/1/2, 113/22 L, B+, 8/3/5, 79/20 L, S-, 18/3/9, 208/37 W, ?, 8/3/10, 104/27 L, C+, 3/3/0, 62/16 W, C+, 3/3/8, 93/28 W, ?, 8/0/3, 122/22 W, ?, 21/1/9, 160/30 W, ?, 8/9/17, 69/15

I hit M5 with that most recent match, and M6 requires S- or better, twice (to say nothing of M7's S+ or better, three times). But, as you can see, my grades are usually mediocre.

Now, I'm fully aware that my CS is bad, basically topping out at 5/min. I'm trying to improve that, not only during lane phase but also later on when side lanes have lots of farm available. The problem I'm having with CS is that I sometimes have to choose between mindlessly split pushing for CS and joining my team for a teamfight, and the latter is usually preferable given Kat's strengths.

So. Any tips for getting those tokens? Focus more on CS and less on kills, ward more, maybe even switch to something kooky like bot lane APC Kat? Any advice welcome.

CS is definitely the culprit here. As you are aware, 5 cs/min is bad. You seem to be mechanically skilled on Kat though given your K/D/A's, so that isn't a problem. I also play Katarina a lot and i was like you about a year ago. Good KDA, lots of kills, and winning lots of games, but bad CS. Only recently did I figure out how to balance between CS and trades in lane. It just takes practice and a lot of time to get down. But once you do, you'll be doing even better in your games.

Just tried bot Kat, kinda supporting, also kinda taking CS. W, A+, 9/6/14, 50/22. If that's as close to an S- as W, A+, 24/5/8, 166/37, I think I know what I'll do.

Have you tried rolling your face on the keyboard?

Just learned that top Kat works fine for winning, but not for grades. W, A, 15/4/3, 107/24. I think the optimal place is bot.

How often do you ward?

That is also part of grade.

Apparently, W, A+, 8/0/4, 121/20 is a thing. Only issue I can think of here is that I just didn't have enough raw score. Seems like every time I'm doing well and I think I'll get that token, the enemy can tell, too, and they FF.
