PSA: Riot actually does have a clue what they are doing

Edit #1: Had to repost for wrong board

TLDR AT BOTTOM

_** First things First: I am a low elo player. I am in Silver 5, and I fully admit that I probably should actually be in high bronze, but, as my grandmother always says, "Just because I don't know how to swim doesn't mean I can't tell that you're drowning"

That said, just because YOU can't play against a champion, or YOU can't play as a champion, does not mean that nerfs/buffs to that champion are unjustified.

Example #1: _** Down here in the lowly pit of salt that is Silver 5, all of my fellow trashlos RAGED that Leblanc got buffs. I, trying to be the sensable one, politely explained to them that she is in a really bad spot, and actually has horrible winrates, as do most AP assassins in general right now.

"BUT INSTABURST AUTOTARGET WAVECLEAR SOLO BARON 5 MINUTES 20/0 INSTAFREELO NO SKILL NOOB CHAMP"

_**

Now let me just say something, I personally dreaded that she got a buff. Why? Because I SUCK against her.

I, mechanically, do not have the skills to lane against a skilled Leblanc player.

I can admit that, and that is why that although I know that now i'm going to be stomped even HARDER by her, for the game, overall, it is a good thing.

Example #2: _** My best friend who I love to death is literally the saltiest player in this entire game. You know who he hates?

"No skill, zero counterplay, broken OP, auto attack based champions" Yasuo Jax LeeSin Darius Fiora Irelia Shyvana Quinn MasterYi MissFortune ect. ect.

When Lee got buffed, I tried to point out to my friend that his win rate was abysmal, and as a champion with both a high skill floor and cap, his 125+ win rates should be a LOT more than 48%.

"NO YOU JUST Q THEN E THEN R THEN W AND INSTANTLY WIN EVERY MATCHUP BECAUSE YOUR SO BROKEN OMG WHY ARE THEY BUFFING HIM" "B...Because he loses literally 45% of games" "OMG YOUR JUST A SCRUB I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DON'T THINK HE'S FREELO WAY TO RIDE RIOTS DICK"

And, my dear friend, being a bronzie just like me, never takes the time to try any of these champions.

"ugh why would I even play yasuo he's so simple you just q and ult and win every teamfight" "omg fiora so broken her passive deals true damage AND heals" "Shyvana is so stupid you literally just auto attack a person and they die" "wow gg they have a yi"

Literally one game with ANY of these champions would show they have GLARING weaknesses that can be exploited. Personally, the only ones listed that I struggle against are Irelia and Yasuo, but once again, that's because i'm just outright not a good player.

_**

And now, to the topic that brought me to write this post.

Why the fuck are we complaining about the Gangplank and Elise nerfs?

Literally all of last patch, Gangplank was the highest win rate top AND mid laner. Elise's win rate went from 48% to 53% OVERNIGHT

I get that both gangplank and Elise are fairly high skill floor champions, but seriously guys? Those winrates are insane. Also, y'all getting your panties in a bunch over a 20 second increase on Gangplank's ult, a 5 move speed deduction on Elise, and a 15 base damage reduction on her human w.

ERMAGERD RITO DUMPSTERS MEKANIKLY INTENSIVE CHAMPS. THEY LUVE LEESIN FREELO

Both Elise and Gangplank have tons of potential in their kit, especially in the hands of the right player. These little touches aren't going to instantly exile them from the game. They just won't.

Elise literally has a tankbuster, and execute, a homing missile, an AS boost, a stun, untargetability, and a ton of built in sustain. Meanwhile gangplank has a giant AOE targeted slowing DOT that can be upgraded to have massive effects and can be cast anywhere on the map, from anywhere on the map, making him present in virtually any teamfight, even if he is busy doing something else all the way across the map.

Both these champions are powerful today, and they will STILL be powerful next patch after the nerfs. _**

One final question: If you were a game designer and you saw two champions, one with a winrate of 45% and one with a winrate of 55%, who would you buff, and who would you nerf.

Exactly. _** TLDR: Please just stop being salty over things that you can't deal with. Chances are you're not the best player in the game, and chances are you don't understand jack shit about balance. Riot has people who get PAID to do this, trust them. If someone is being buffed/nerfed, it's for a REASON, not because they have some weird fetish/hatred towards a specific champion, they are just observing statistics and game patterns and reacting to them. If you want to have a say in balance, there is an entire webpage devoted to Riot Job Applications, and you are more than welcome to apply.

Winrate doesn't tell much. Poppy is one of the strongest bruisers in the game yet sat at a 45% WR last patch.

Leblanc got buffed by 1% according to champion.gg I think LB is strong right now because of the heavy snowball that Riot is pushing. This makes sense when her WR spikes at around the 30 minute mark and starts to fall again near the 35. She only ever passes the 50% WR at the 30 minute mark which seems to suggest that for the higher WR LB players (56% at 125+ games) is where they're ending games.

With champions above a 10% playrate (such as LB) it's important to take into consideration that their WR is going to be skewed (especially on the lower end) by bad LB players even at higher elo. To see this the average LB player has 60 games. A person with 60 games on LB should be sitting at a 49% WR on her. "Then why is her average WR at a 47%?" This is due to the extremes on both sides. Due to some players having 2000+ games on LB while some might only have 5 you can see where extremes pop up. Since more people are playing LB with a games of (I'll say here 20-25) You'll be sitting at around the 45% WR. This is then inflated by the LB mains who are sitting at the 50+ games and the LB gods with 150+ games.

"How do you then get a higher average game count and WR?" WR is static it's calculated by every game played by every LB player. If you have 1000 LB games and 500 are won you have a 50% WR. Now lets say 400 of those games were played by 20 accounts for 20 games, 300 of those were played by 6 guys with 50 games, and 300 more were played by 3 guys with 100 games. AKA 71% of your population is playing 20 games, 17% is 50, and 12% is 100. You now have 28 LB accounts and 1000 games or an average of 35 games played on LB. Since I can't access number of unique accounts on LB I can't give you exact data, but it would suggest that people that are really good with LB play a lot of games with her while people that are really bad with her play her a couple of times and then quit. This means that you can have like 50 people playing LB at a 57% WR while 5000 people are playing her at a 45%.

From this at Riot you can see two things. 1) Top tier LBs are sitting at the correct WR at about a 55-57% WR (Which seems to be what they try to aim for on balanced champions). 2) Low tier LB players are sitting under where they should be even for a skilled champion. Lets buff something that won't mess with top tier LB too much while making LB easier to pick up and reach the high tier WR easier. This results in the chain speed buff. You then see a bump of 1% on the low end (bumping her WR by about 1% overall due to yet again most players sitting around that low game amount) while not seeing much movement at all at the high end.

Basically what Riot wants to aim for on skilled champions is this 1-20 games 45-47% WR 20-70 games 47-51% WR 70-125 games 51-54% WR 125+ games 54%-57% WR

tl;dr When balancing for a skilled champion flat WR means nothing. You have to look at basic, intermediate, refined, and mastered levels of games and their respective WR to see true balance.

That made a whole lot of sense actually. I'll keep that in mind when buffs and nerfs come up. Knowing that sort of rationelle might make it easier to calm down my salty friends.
