Why Mana Potions Should NOT BE REMOVED (with solution)
The Dev blog cites 100 mana as being more or less cost efficient for certain champions, so how do we fix this? SOLUTION: Make mana potions restore % of max mana pool OR increase mana regen by a %. - this would have the same intended effect as the change to mana regen items in patch 4.20.
Our decision to remove mana pots goes along the same philosophy as starting items. 100 mana tends to benefit certain types of champions over others (with mana costs being balanced against individual champion kits) and can wildly shift from being a mediocre purchase to a very cost-efficient one.
Reasons Against Removing Mana Potions:
-
Champions do not exist in a box, they do not simply go to lane and farm until they get a mana regen item.
-
Not all champions, whether mana dependent or not, should be required to build a mana regen item as their first large 2000g+ buy.
-
Many champions already rely on multiple Doran's rings for mana and I assume there will be a "buy one only" policy for the new unique starting items as is with the support items.
-
Objectives outside of laning (dragon, ganking, rift herald, laners taking jungle camps, roaming to other lanes) become incredibly dangerous and predictable for heavily mana dependent champions in the early - mid game.
-
Decrease strategic diversity by discouraging non-meta matchups / roles for different champions. We already see huge contrasts between standard laning champions and those intended to play only the support role or champions not intended for jungling (AP Ratios, spell use on champions only, monster damage caps, base stats).
-
Junglers that rely on blue buff will be balanced with this in mind and will not have the choice to give it to their midlaner and take mana potions instead.
-
Laning against high pressure / fast pushing champions that do not need mana to push becomes incredibly difficult. This forces you to back (predictably) or let the champion continuously push on your turret, while leaving you no room to retaliate when you finally get a gank.
Lastly, I believe removing mana potions is a great idea for balancing mana costs but should be implemented on the PBE and not forced upon the greater LoL community for S6.
