Can we get Team Builder for ranked games?
Sick of being last pick in Ranked Solo/Duo queue and being assigned some role you REALLY don't want (or have no clue how) to do?
Yeah, me too. I'd throw 2,000 Earth moneys to the developer who could make a Team Builder interface for Ranked gameplay. Similar to the Normal Game Team Builder interface really, but with a few small tweaks.
Now let's get into the meat of how and why this should absolutely be a thing.
Concept:
The idea behind a Ranked Team Builder (RTB for short) is to give players the opportunity to lock down the role they want to play in Solo/Duo queue. Simply select the role(s) you want to play during this game in the pre-queue interface, then you're ready to go! Simple and effective while not affecting the rules and boundaries of ranked gameplay. From there, the system would remain the same compared to our Draft Pick mode. 3 bans alternating between teams followed by champion select phase. Once all players have selected a champion, they may switch champions and/or roles freely for 30 seconds after the final selection (provided each player has the corresponding champion of course).
Ultimately, the benefits of a system like this are numerous and necessary. This system would help to mitigate the presence of trolls (for example people who are last pick choosing Jungle
as punishment because they didn't get their preferred lane) and help extinguish Champion Select chat flame-wars over lane/champion once and for all.
PROS
- People would get to play the roles they actually want to play, thus allowing people to put their best foot forward (and isn't that what ranked is about? Giving your all to become the best?).
- Team Builder system would mitigate flame wars between team members over what role or champion they choose to play.
- Faster, hassle-free queue times.
- Happier, less stressful ranked games.
- It's pre-season! What better time to make changes than now?
CONS
- Cons? What cons? This is a great idea!
FAQ/Complaints
Q: You shouldn't play ranked if you don't know how to play all roles! A: I agree with this sentiment, to an extent. However, my skills as a jungler may not be equal to my skills as a top lane player. I play like a Gold 3 player in the jungle, but like a Bronze 5 player in top lane. Bee's first rule of ranked: Play to your strengths.
Q: If you change the system, it makes it unfair and ruins the ranked experience. A: These changes would have no effect on the fairness of ranked gameplay in the current meta and provides no advantages to any one player. Think of it more as a Quality of Life enhancement.
Q: What's the point? The current system is fine! A: I'd much rather have a system that is 'Great' rather than just 'Fine'. Wouldn't you? I'd like less trolls in ranked queues. Wouldn't you?
Q: Why not just play ranked teams? A: Many players, like myself, don't synergize well in 5 man teams where communication is plentiful. As a jungler, I THRIVE and PREY on players who don't communicate well. Which is why I particularly do my best in Solo queue...
I also don't have many friends... ... ... Anyways.
Summary
In short, this would be an amazing contribution to League's ranked community. It would help to douse the flames that sporadically burst to life when someone can't play to their full potential due to being a late pick or because someone else is attempting to throw the game for them. The ranked community needs this quite desperately. As a Silver 5 player, I have to take long breaks from Solo Queue because of stuff like this:
