When would I ever want to buy Maw of Malmortius?

Since pretty much every bruiser goes item 3078+item 3053 since Sterak's makes the sheen proc stronger, makes you nice and tanky and triggers lifeline off all damage types, why would I ever want to buy item 3155 / item 3156? I can see rushing hexdrinker into difficult AP matchups but or AP heavy comps but then why would I complete it when I could just buy Sterak's? Maw seems it pales in comparison to Sterak's; • Sure Maw gives a nice magic shield which scales directly off your MR but what about the ADC who is usually not irrelevant • +50 AD is nice but what about my +50% AD increase from Sterak's which will make my sheen proc stronger? • More often than not the enemy team will have reliable Hard CC to pin me down which Sterak's gives me tenacity to help deal with. Maw just gives sustain which how am I supposed to use if I'm CC chained?

I'm just unsure why I would ever want item 3156 over since it seems too situational and item 3053 is just so much more useful.

EDIT: I forgot about other classes lol

Well no it got its lethality removed in preseason 7 because riot didn't want assassins and stuff getting it actually but they are the only ones that build it even now so basically what they did failed

Patch 6.22 NEW RECIPE: Hexdrinker + Caulfield's Warhammer + Gold 850 = Gold 3250 OLD RECIPE: Hexdrinker + Serrated Dirk+ Gold 850 = Gold 3250. Attack damage reduced to 50 from 55. Magic resistance increased to 45 from 40. Lifegrip passive now also grants 20 attack damage. NEW EFFECT: +10% cooldown reduction. REMOVED: +10 armor penetration.

because your supposed to care about ap champs bursting you and would be willing to at least slightly weaken your offense to get more MR and and ap shield...

but yeah that hasn't really been the case of a while.

you as champs don't even remotely need it to trash all the ap champs.

The extra effects you get from the items_(the +30% Tenacity from Sterak's and the +20 AD / +10% LS / +10% SV from Maw)_ will both activate whenever either one's shield is triggered, since those bonuses trigger when Lifeline does and both items' shields are called Lifeline.

Getting both isn't necessarily a bad thing, though for bruisers Sterak's is the better "general" choice of the two.

How do they both trigger if the passive is Unique

Because Sterak's Gage has "Sterak's Fury" and Maw has "Lifegrip" which both trigger when "Lifeline" triggers. The shield is unique but the effects that go with the shield are not.

Just don't buy it on someone you would buy item 3078 on? Malmortious is good on assassins, sometimes on marksmen and you could get it on a bruiser that doesn't buy item 3078

I like it on Olaf. Olaf gets stronger the lower health he is which goes perfectly with the lifegrip passive. Olaf gets about 45% increased healing when he is almost dead. This paired with the spell vamp (affects his Q and E), life steal, and increased damage and attack speed from his passive makes him difficult to kill without burst damage.

ITT: situational items are situational.

You don't ever buy Merc Scim either unless the enemy team has a reliable stun/snare. You don't go Hexdrinker/Maw unless your enemy laner will be destroyed by it (Teemo, Kennen, etc). You don't rush an early Bramble Vest unless you're laning against Aatrox or something.
