How to Lane Against Veigar?

Lets assume you're laning in the mid, and either because you're in blind pick (why are you in blind pick?) or the draft just worked that way you have to lane with an AP champion against a Veigar. What do you build that doesn't snowball his R into a near oneshotting monstrosity in the mid game?

Yes, this is from recent experience. I picked Annie (because I read somewhere that she can counter Veigar) and did alright in the early game. By the end of the game I had 100 magic resist but Veigar was still destroying me and my team. He wasn't the only one on their team getting multiple kills (we'd probably have lost that game even if he just broke even), but he was the biggest single problem.

With that said, what would you do to lane against Veigar with an AP champ? Operate under the assumption that you're stuck with the AP champ and can't grab an AD mid.

Don't play Annie into him. Shes a short range mage with no mobility other than flash, this is what veigar WANTS to play against. I'm actually a veigar main, but he's in such a rough spot right now I dont play him much. However champions like Orianna, Annie, Ahri, Malzahar, and Diana are what Veigar wants to play against. He really struggles against long range mages like Lux and Xerath, and of course Zed and Talon destroy him. If you are stuck playing a short range mage against veigar, either try to kill him pre 6 or just keep shoving him to outfarm him. Once you've outfarm (because you couldnt solo kill) just roam post 6, if youre annie or ahri, you can just make bot lane your bitch.

pick a long range champ like xerat or varus ... pick malzahar and stay save - dont get into ult range :-D

You build abyssal or RoA first as a precaution but as the game goes on you have no choice but to avoid his stun + ult.

Actually you can zhonyas his big ult particle and it'll do no damage and be a used cooldown for him. Trouble is you cannot do that if stunned.

Although I don't know much about mages, I know a lot about this matchup. So if I was stuck with picking an ap mid vs veigar, I'd take Ekko , Leblanc or Fizz . Generally, you want to poke him a lot so he doesn't stack his Q. If his W is on cd, you have lane control. And even if he has it, it's pretty easy to predict/dodge it. I don't push the wave, I let him push it a little, which he will automatically do most of the time, since his Q hits 2 targets, so I can poke him without worrying about being ganked.

Harass hard whenever he doesn't have ult. Build low amount of AP and more utility. Haunting Guise, ROA, Athene's, and Abyssal are fantastic to neutralize the effectiveness of Veigar's ultimate.

Eventually he reaches a point where he will one shot you regardless if you are AP or not, I wouldn't worry too much about it

The best thing to do is build Zhonya's Hourglass, then when you see his ult flying at you, use it. Pay attention to him.

Your other option is to just pick a lane bully and force him to play safe. Deny him farm. If he can't farm with his Q, he won't have the AP to burst you late game. Throw in a bit of magic resist and he'll seem extremely weak. With Annie, you should be farming with your Q and then going for a trade combo of Q W Basic (for Thunderlord's) at every opportunity you get. Once you get 6, drop Tibbers on him and proceed to 1-shot.

Bully him, dodge his W. If you got a bit of MR and dodge his W Veigar can't burst you down and he has little to no DPS, it's just burst. His stun is delayed so you should never get hit by it unless CC'ed by another champion into it. As Annie you can pretty much oneshoot him if he misspositions.

You bully the hell outta him pre-6. If you dont deny him farm before 6, you lose lane. His early game is awful, so if you bully him early you should be fine, if you struggle try getting RoA, or scepter, maybe even veil.

Thank you too all the people that gave good advice, I'll try to use it next time I don't have a choice. In the mean time I'll save for an AD mid, probably some sort of assassin.

You just have to kill him and or zone him away from cs'ing with his Q. Make him tilt, win lane and etcs.

The last time I went against Veigar in lane as an AP (to my memory at least) I was AP Sona. I built AP and we repeatedly one shot each other.

The best defense is a good offense, after all. He can't kill you when he's dead.
