Reminiscing about old Xerath

XerathXerath used to be my all time favorite champion having the ability to turn into a stationary turret at will and burst the enemies from afar. His kit had some feel of uniformity in that his W would give him that beautiful unmatched range of all his spells; his E wasn't just a random orb he chucked out, it attempted to sync with his kit with rewarding the stun if you managed to land another spell in quick succession. The current form he is in, while of course functional (but let's be honest, viability doesn't mean good, it just means they decided to give him good base damage and scaling, it says NOTHING about quality champion design), is simply never going to give the exhilarating feeling I, and others who had never had the opportunity to try him, would have felt. He was a turn off because of his reliance on skillshots or something, I'm not really sure, but he was very powerful and LOOOADS and loads of fun. I have given this new Xerath a try and I end up getting very tired and bored of just being this awkward former arcane master floating around with his goofy looking spells. This brings me to my next point, how on Earth did anybody at the Riot honestly believe that the revamped textures and particles of his spells looked better? The are incredibly unsatisfying. Take a moment to look at some old Xerath footage and tell me that it doesn't look far more exciting to play than the current garbage....

Old Xerath was amazing. You actually could do somethings in teamfights and you could be able to do damage without having to impair yourself.

I feel exactly the same. Even though he was considered pretty strong some point after the rework and nerfed, I never felt powerful on him like I did on old Xerath. His ult feels so underwhelming compared to what it used to be, his W was much more fun conceptually before, etc etc. I don't know why he was reworked. He was one of the few champions that felt powerful and fun and demanded respect from enemies when fed.

I used to main old xerath and I feel the exact same way as you.

Even if the new xerath is super strong, he will never be as fun as the old one.

For me it is mostly because of the old ultimate that was so fun to use.

I wish they just had remade the Q with the new one.

Removed the point and click E because it was stupid and they didn't touch arcane barrage.

They could have done whatever they want with the passive and the W.

Because free Mpen and Armor was totally great.

when your prized kit has changed into some random circle aoe with a slow. feels bad

As much as I like the new Xerath I can't deny what OP said.

It felt powerful, overwhelming when you pu that plays into action, you were a presence that the others had to be careful about.

Never forget http://static.fjcdn.com/gifs/I+love+xerath+tis+a+shame+he+s+not+played+more_3c37d5_4918279.gif

You say that Xerath's new abilites have no synergies with eachother, but you are dead wrong.

Granted they may not have some special effect to them if you land two spells together or something, but they still synergize very well and i am able to take him top, mid , and even support with mild success.

Your easiest ability to land is W, with it's large AOE really great at poking people trying to farm. That ALSO slows the target (by a really significant amount come late game). That slow? Perfect for lining up your E. Your E holds them in place for your Q. Thus landing one ability can turn into landing three abilities. Seems like it synergizes to me. Even then there are still other combos. Need to escape a gank? Throw a E, if you land the stun that makes for a perfect center on his W, which maximizes the slow. Landing either W or E can make for a quick ult barrage to finish them off too.

As far as his old kit....its four fucking years old, don't you think it's a little late to be talking about something like this?

I've looked at his original champion spotlight so i can see what you are talking about with his abilities and particles.

Abilites are pretty interesting. A little unorthodox but interesting. The particle effects however are straight garbage. Not bad for what league used to be, but now? Those particles would be unacceptable.

And I think I know why they chose to rework him the way they did.

Pretty sure that with his old kit people would just press W, Q, and then W again to quick cast a long range Q without really having to sacrifice any movement at all, which isn't what Riot was intending. Pair this with bonus armor that comes with Ap and you have a mage with may have difficulty in lane but is pretty safe in team fights and able to do alot of damage.

For me, Xerath has become the AP version of yasuo. While many people complain that he's incredibly annoying to play against, I just take something rather unorthodox (in my case, either viktor or kennen) and repeatedly murder him in lane. The problem with his kit isn't so much that he lacks damage, but rather that when he's on "even footing" with the other laner his spell rotation becomes incredibly easy to predict/avoid (stand behind minions to dodge the stun, and walk into him when he tries to land the other two spells). Not exactly sure how to fix his kit (as increasing the damage might be broken and you can't really "give" him a short-range set), would be nice to see him become a bit better though as then I could potentially face a challenge against him in lane.

Don't forget his passive was something unique, and gave a reason to pick him against midlane assassins. But I concur on both the lack of interesting gameplay & unimpressive graphics when they reworked him years ago. There were hundreds of pages bringing up what you mentioned when riot fist shown the reworked form in beta, but riot did it anyway out of spite yet again. Several of the older champions have been ruined in such a fashion, doesn't make the game worth playing anymore really.

Old xerath? You mean the squishy mobile turret? Lol funny times. I preferred him as well. I didn't main him, but I enjoyed being a turret.

Holy Shit his old abilities look bad ass i had forgotten what they looked like. I still think he's stupid OP right now though. I Also think that Riot just needs to make player polls and ask the community if something should be changed before they change it. Sometimes they just need to leave stuff the fuck alone. I want my old Malzahar back.

when was "Old" Xerath a thing? I have been around since the middle ish of season 4 so I dont know much ;-;

I played the old Xerath and I have played the new Xerath and....I like the new one more.

I love the animation/effect of his Q.

E...while I do miss it being a target spell at least I don't have to hit another spell in order to stun with it.

And ult...by god that range. I love sniping someone low when they are recalling with it. :D

Sorry about how informal I was about writing this, I was heated in the moment and wanted to get stuff out... haha

I keep seeing this opinion around but i dont agree with it. It didnt feel good to lock yourself down to function as the champion intended and his spells were so short without it. Maybe i just never played him enough to get used to it but i was immediately turned off from him yet love the new xerath.

understand that the free 40% mpen had to go. and his passive could have been so much more. I was actually wondering what xerath rework would look like, if it was done now, seeing the success of the last reworks ^^
