What is a "soft cap"?

I know what a normal cap is, but what is a "soft cap"?

Also, can someone tell me what stats have caps and where? I know CDR is 40% (unless using the mastery bonus).

Please and thank you!

Movement speed has two soft caps applied to it.

Once your movement speed exceeds certain values, further movement speed increases are reduced so that you only get a percentage of the raw value.

at what point do those soft caps come into play

The point of diminishing returns. When getting too much of a stat doesnt give you as much benefit.

basically armor then

no stats have caps other than attack speed and CDR to my knowledge. a soft cap is diminishing returns (aka less benefit after a certian point) i think.

No such thing as a "normal cap"

It's a term that comes from MMOs, Soft caps and hard caps

Soft Caps is how much points you can put into a stat until you start getting diminishing returns. a hard cap is how much points you can put into a stat until it is maxed out.

League has no soft caps, only a hard cap on Atk speed, and CDR

There are a few soft caps (and floors), mainly applying to movement speed. I don't know the values off the top of my head, but once you reach them, further increases (or decreases) are not as strong.

Notice how Thresh's ult does NOT reduce the victim's movespeed down to 3-5, despite it being a 99% slow. The formula for the movement speed floor is "If speed < floor, then speed = speed/2 + floor/2", or more simply, the greater of the two values "calculated movespeed" and "average of the calculated speed and the soft floor".

I definitely don't remember the soft cap values, but I think the soft floor is 200, which means that as you apply stronger and stronger slows to a target, their speed approaches 100. They can still move, and they're still slower than if they'd had a lesser slow applied to them, but they aren't crawling so slowly that their movement means nothing.

100% slows are an exception; those actually do reduce your speed to 0.

Attack speed caps at 2.5 attacks a second

soft cap means you get a diminishing return, e.g. put 1 point in strength for 3 damage until 50 points when 1 point in strength equals 1.5 damage

a hard cap is either VERY diminished returns or the stat becomes maxed out
