Are Champion Rank Rewards weighted against Support? No S of any form, No chests

ky4t3··4 votes·873 views

Just curious how individual champion rankings work for support. I find myself getting final scores, like 0/3/21 with Soraka or 3/2/25 with Braum for example, and receiving no S of any form. Not even a minus. And therefore no chest. No reward.

I am a Support main, but am finding myself asking "Why? There is literally no reward for good performance." Main Supports are fewer in number than any other type of player, followed by Top and ADC.

Are Chest Rewards for kills? If so, how does that help Supports? - We get harassed for most kills outside of teamfights. Am I just not performing well enough to earn them?

I am lucky IF I get ONE PER WEEK! What is going on? Is it me? (Also posted in Help & Support)

There are many factors involved in Support Grades. KDA isn't, by any stretch, the only stat you need to excel at to get an S. Other stats that matter are:

  • Damage Dealt to Champions
  • Damage Healed (More important on healers, of course)
  • Wards Placed
  • Wards Destroyed
  • Control Wards Purchased (Not heavily weighted, but could still matter)
  • KP% (Kill Participation % - I've never scored an S with less than 50% KP, no matter how well I do.)
  • Earned Gold per Minute (I've never gotten an S with a Support scoring under 300g/min)
  • CS (To a lesser extent than other roles. I've gotten an S with 19 CS but big numbers elsewhere.)

The weights of each are tied to the specific champion you're playing and how well others have done on them. When I score decently well in each category, generally I'll get an S- even with a mediocre KDA. Putting up big numbers in specific stats helps, but generally against the Support Community, these are the stats you should worry about.

Thank you very much for this info.

I can roll Eye of Oasis/Equinox, accurate pokes, and Bandit in a strong ADC farm as well as grab a few for myself - but I can't do more than that without verbal abuse from my team and/or working against them... I can find myself at times performing better than most of my team and they walk away with S's of varying degree while I walk away empty handed despite reasonable, quality work. And with the Damage Dealt, G/min, and CS being weighted - it seems add up to it being much more difficult to score chests and ranks as a Support Main.

Not necessarily. Doing really well in one or two categories will generally cover it. I've found that as long as I'm vigilant about warding (not just placing wards anywhere but actually fighting for vision control) and I actively work to proc my gold charges, I'll get decent grades simply by being well rounded statistically.

If you do what a Support is supposed to do, eventually you'll do it really well without thinking about it to much. That's when the S grades will start to come, because games where you excel will become that much stronger overall.

This is undeniably true. However, I was thinking about player pools - your performance ranked vs others...

Main supports are the smallest group in League. So the player base is highly specialized, therefore the champion comparisons are going to be harder on support players than any other role.

It seems by this (albeit flawed) logic that Chests and S's are harder to get as a support main because the bar is higher for those champions. My specialization is Soraka - Rank 7, and Leona - Rank 6. However, if I want to widen my skill set it means I can't expect rewards with new champs until I am exceptional with them, even if I have a great game.

This doesn't really encourage champion diversity in the Support role for Mains.

The same for all others, based on your performance, if you want S ranks you have to play better.

That is the most general, subjective, and unhelpful statement ever.

XD Well sorry but what do you expect to get for a question that has no real answer?

Mastery ratings works the same for all champions in all roles as far as the playerbase can tell you with the very limited information we have on it.

Nobody can tell you what to do to get higher ratings because that information is a Riot secret. All we know is that it is in part % based, meaning only the top % of performances get any kind of S rank, so all we can say is the ever helpful "git gud" comment. But at least its fair, you only get compared to people who use the same champion in the same role.

I don't know what you want from me. You could have just googled this info.

I can't Google "secret info."

I wasn't asking for snark and it is not a stupid question - --it seems legit that when I score 3/2/25 with Braum that I kicked the shit out of that team, that I fed my team, and performed the role well that game. --it seems legit that my taking resources from teammates instead of utilizing and funneling resources to the damage would work against a victory rather than for it.

So the Answer to my question is: Yes. Chests are weighted against supports. Thank you.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

I wasn't referring to secret info, I was referring to the information I gave you, which you could have just googled.

Like so: https://www.google.com/search?q=LoL+mastery+rating&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 Which will get you here: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/page/features/champion-mastery

It's also not snark, I'm just trying to help you by providing accurate information instead of baseless suggestions, which is something a lot of people make about mastery ratings on this forum.

Please do not believe people when they tell you you need to do at least X thing X amount of times, nobody knows how the underlying analytics work or on what terms you are graded. The most useful advice you can get is to just get better at the game, but how to do that is not something you should ask me, ask the pros.

And if you would please look at my post again without assuming its just snark you'll hopefully come to the conclusion that chests can't be weighted against supports, because its based on your performance against other people playing the same champion as you in the same role as you, score in the top % of that pool of people and you'll get yourself some S ranks.

Supports don't really farm CS in Ranked from my experience- not easily and not until mid to late game. And usually we're being pulled into the push/defend while the ADC gets some farm in lane. Any CS I get before mid game is CS denied to my ADC - which I shouldn't be doing just so I can get a rank 7 with Leona, it seems anti-team.

And I have gotten chests as Support with deaths, but like 0/2/32 - and that just seems unreal given the role is not permitted CS or Kills by their team.

I am Rank 7 with Soraka. And 6 with Leona. But it has been nothing but playing them to get there - which doesn't provide with much variability of play or let me be more conditional at picks so I can provide better for my team ie. Sustain or Tank. I can't vary my champion play because I am trying to hard to rank up.

I'm not saying you should cs, just that I think the requirement for S might have a Cs in there. You know how riot is, they'll do some bs without thinking about it.

Ughhhh that sucks. It means I have to prioritize CS over CD taunts, warding, protecting the ADC, engaging, surviving...everything. Most supports are expected to roam by mid-game... And if you go mid and take their CS while trying to push/gank - there are horrible, tilty consequences...

They removed this aspect, quite a while ago.

I believe CS no longer plays any part in a Support's grade. I could be remembering it wrong, but I'm certain they did something to heavily reduce the impact of CS on support grades.

often as support, I get CS by farming an unattended lane after the laning phase. Teamfight is just over, done my warding round, wave is pushed against a tower with allies on the other side of the map -> I'm gonna take that wave before I back. No use feeding them to the tower.

If you keep your eyes open for opportunities like this, you can get decent farm for a support. And you'll only buff yourself. Supports need gold too dammit.

I am often told to leave these lanes by other teammates so they can farm them, so I often open jungles via plants/wards or create a farm lane for them by providing vision to access lanes to where they are.

The only way I have found that an ADC won't cry that I shoved their lane, or jungle won't cry cause they are fighting for CS too.....usually Top doesn't care (Hrmm....).... is to stand in lane and earn it passively. --- I find myself avoiding conflict/abuse by my team by avoiding CS. The Hate for Supports getting CS is real.

I usually have no gold problem with Eye of the Oasis/Equinox and Bandit mastery, most of my gold is earned passively or from assists. In fact, because I have to start prioritizing farm over other support things feels as if I have to start UnSupporting to get rewards and that makes no sense...

Kitty Cat Tosha2 votes

if the wave is shoved against the tower and your allies are either dead or on the other side of the map, just take those minions. They would die to the turret anyway. Ignore allies who tell you otherwise.

This whole "thou shall not take any CS whatever" rule is nonsense.

I agree, yet some games turn so easily as teammates tilt at the tiniest of made-up infractions.

Those are kill supports - usually turning into another tank or marksman by mid to late game. I usually play full support - and those kills supports are High Risk, High Reward which doesn't seem like solid, uniform play.

I find it disheartening that to earn ranks that I would have better luck straying from an actual support.

Yrzen2 votes

You would have much better luck straying from using an actual Support, but their viability as kill Supports isn't the reason.

As said elsewhere, grades are based off of your performance compared to others with your champion/role combination. As such, any unusual combination is easier to earn S with because basically no one (in comparison to the mains of any champion going 20/0 in their designated role) are pushing the limits of what that champion can do in that role.

In other words, just as it's easier to earn an S with a non-Support in the Support role, (I once got an S for going 5/6/13 as Support Jinx, I can only imagine it was because of my wards) it's also easier to earn an S with a Support champion outside of the Support role.

Try some new stuff, see how it pans out.

From my experience of from playing support (yes i do play a lot of support) I think you need kills to add to your score to get an S. I've had games where I was putting up those similar scores with high assists and low deaths but still an A+. Then the there are game where im like 3/2/24 and I get an S or S-. On average for a long lasting game it seems that you need about 4 kills to get your S. Its kinda frustrating that you do need kills as a support to get an S but i guess this is Ritos grading system. Every time i play a good supp game with my friends and dont get an S I always joke around saying I didnt KS enough but in reality we know its the truth

Yaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssss!

I have gotten S+ on a no kill Soraka. But I was like 0/0/X or 0/1/X - It was early this season and I don't remember the exact number of assists.

I think I can clear this up for you. Your ranking is based on all of the aforementioned items, however, it is weighted against other players in your mmr playing that champ in that role. You did well as Soraka and Braum, but according to Riot's statistics you did not exceed the level of play of your fellow summoners at your level of experience. In other words, your requirements for getting an S on a champ in a role are completely different from my requirements unless you are Bronze IV 1300 MMR as well... summoner 3 item 3070

On top of that, once you unlock Mastery 5, the grading gets more strict for each subsequent mastery level. So while you may have earned tons of S's on Soraka at mastery 1, the requirements to get S at mastery 7 are a lot higher.

A large weight when it comes to scoring is skill shots thrown to skill shots landed percentage, and times hit by skillshots.
