Auto-Attacks - I Don't Think I'm Doing It Right - Help!

So, I main Janna support and I have always been terrible at any other role. Recently, I changed to Sona which is a huge focus on auto-attacks. I have probably put 20-30 games in with her. I'm realizing that I'm auto-attacking unintended targets. And she does it while idle in the brush and I'm watching a wave pushed up to enemy turret.

When I play, I right click the enemy I want to auto. My character moves towards the enemy and will auto, but I also notice that sometimes guaranteed crit autos go to minions which is unintended.

I tried just letting the mouse cursor sit on the enemy with the red sword icon and my champion does NOT auto. What exactly is going on?

Use A-click, you wont walk towards where you click, but if you aren't used to it you might fail and click a creep, but its better than inting, this is what ranged champions use to kite easier.

If you're using Attack Move/Click, it will defer to the closest target to your mouse cursor where you clicked. This can cause "misses". If you have "Automatically Attack" checked, then even regular moves will do this, except they will defer to the target closest to your champion when you stop moving.

Both of these can "throw off" your AA's. The best advice I can give you is to learn to use the "Only Target Champions" button in emergency situations.

I am so confused. I need to look at this in a practice run. :(

There should be an option called "autoattack" under your in-game settings.

Disable it and see if it fixes the issue.
