How the fuck does MR work?

I was playing Malphite in ARAM. Yes, I understand hes way tankier against armor. That being said. Went into a game against TF, Bard, Swain, Brand, and Ezreal who went AP. I was the only possible tank so I decided to just buy MR items. we got stomped so hard cause of their CC but what was frustrating me is that no matter how much MR I had. They never seemed to do less damage to me. I had boots, Spirit Visage, and Abyssal Scepter. They had no more MP than boots and brand with Liandry's Torment. How was I taking so much damage? it doesn't make any sense to me.

How the fuck does MR work?

Someone's mad.

But the basics for how MR work are this:

100 makes you take 1/2 magic damage 200 is 1/3 300 is 1/4 400 is 1/5 500 is 1/6

Essentially, every 100 extends your HP bar by another 100%.

That said - defensive itemization has the same pitfalls as offensive itemization. If you fall behind in gold and levels, you quickly fall behind in usefulness.

Offense and defense usually counteract one-another as well. If it takes 10 seconds to kill one-another early game with no items/runes/masteries, it tends to take 10 seconds to kill one-another late game pitting full glass vs. full tank. If it's 1 tank vs. 5 cannons, you go down to 2 seconds of durability - so playing well is all about timing a dive within a 2 second window your team can really capitalize on.

MR and Armor alone won't cut it, you need additional HP. But even with both, chances are you'll still receive massive damage especially in an assembled fight with 2 or more people directly on you =].

I bet it was Ezreal that was really hitting you hard. He had item 3151 which was doing between 2-4% of your HP in burn effect after most spells.

MR multiplies incoming magic damage by (100)/(100+MR) before it's applied. Since it sounds like they were doing well, they could just have been stacking AP faster than you could stack MR. MR actually becomes less effective per-point the more of it you have (the difference between 0 and 10 MR is roughly a 9% decrease in damage, but the difference between 100 and 110 MR is only about 2.5%, even though the same amount of MR was added). It's only really good when combined with a lot of health, since those stack multiplicatively. That is to say, MR and armor multiply your effective health, so the tankiest builds mix HP and armor/MR. It doesn't sound like you had a lot of HP built, which might have been your problem.

Unrelated tip: If you're against a high-magic-damage team like that in ARAM, somebody on the team should build Locket. As the tank, you would have been a perfect candidate for it.

Ok I get all of this. There was not a single Void Staff on the entire team. 1 completed Liandry's was on Brand and the partial was on Swain. Ez didn't even have boots and his Q hit me for about 1/4 of my HP. TF took me from 100% down to like 33% in 1 spell rotation. Then how do Late game tanks work? Cause Champs like Garen or an armor Malphite are nearly unkillable. I played a game that happened that our team had 5 ADC's and they had only a Malph to tank and he went in 1v5 before his team was there and killed 3 of us before we had to run away and he still had 25% HP or so. I don't get it. Am I doing something Wrong?

They may have had a couple items that ignore some of your MR, like item 3135 .

Penetration items are retarded and being a tank is pointless unless you're ahead pretty much sums it up. A single anti-tank item can ignore 2-3 tank items in general
