Why Champion Mastery System can Never Serves its Purpose

Champion Mastery, by the name, is defined to demonstrate how skilled is a player for a certain champion. However, the current system only applies to demonstrate how many games a player has played a certain champion.

The real question is, what defines mastery? Reflex? Knowledge? Flexibility to change your style to fit into a team comp? KDA?

It's not impossible to define mastery, but the problem is, how do we quantify mastery? Currently, the system treats "Amount of games played, with wins weighted more heavily" as the standard to measure mastery. It ignores all factors I listed above. You can still be Lv5 even if you feed for 80 games.

The above flaw leads to a conclusion: We have to quantify as many factors as possible to measure mastery. But...how? Let's make a scenario. You are Zed. You have played a thousand games as him already. You understand all of his limits and capability. Seeing an enemy ADC out-positioning himself, you decide to jump into 1v5 to assassinate him. With your reflex and timing of shadow, you succeed the assassination, in one piece to safety.

What can the system understand from the above scenario? You kill an ADC with Zed, just that. A computer can never understand context. That's the universal difficulty to invent real artificial intelligence. That's why translators and interpreters still exist even when google translate is available for free. That's why Champion Mastery is such an impossible mission to implement, because even human can hardly define champion mastery.

Okay, let's say we have found a way to quantify mastery factors, then what? Collecting certain points to reach high levels? It can still be done by playing a huge amount of games, even if you lose every game and play horribly. How about like ranked? If you play poorly, your rating for that champion drops. Another ladder to climb? I doubt how fun it would be. It also encourage toxicity if players start trash-talking people who play champions with no mastery level at all.

I think the only true way would to be make it another ladder, if you perform poorly you need to loose point. but then that still causes the problems you listed.

its essentially pointless.

As long as people keep on grinding games, they will reach lvl 5 mastery eventually ... it's all about grinding. The "Mastery" doesn't mean anything, it's only there for aesthetic reasons.

I wish it could also taken into account how well you do against counter picks >.>

Youre right... for the wrong reasons.

Champion mastery has a few kinks, but basically, it works like this; You are compared against other instances of the same champion in the same lane.

The reason why this doesnt work is: A) Your points are also determined by win/loss. This bias skews your perception and turns the mastery system into a grind fest. B) From what i can tell, outliers are added to the average instead of ignored, which creates a skewed average that is distinctly not in favor of most players. C) No real reward for hard work (classic skin chroma in a special color (Could be "chrome" for all we care).

Id say ten levels of mastery per champion, with a "mastery" chroma at rank ten, and a "mastery emote" at rank 5. Then for every 100 levels of total mastery you could get, say, a mystery chest.
