It's time to make Mordekaiser a meta pick again, and have him stay that way.
We all remember the time. Back in August, the Juggernaut update shipped, and Mordekaiser was forced into the bottom lane. Bad idea by Riot. It's good to see that they're interested in changing the meta, but they actually forced it instead. Due to Mordekaiser's W being useless without an ally champion nearby, it became evident that Riot actually forced the meta even more than before. He had no choice but to go bottom lane. Sure, he was ridiculously broken for the following 2.5 months, but once patch 5.22 hit the streets, he fell flat on his face, and has struggled to find a proper home ever since. Now, if Riot had instead chosen to make bottom lane an OPTIONAL choice, the rework back in August would have been much more successful, in being both balanced and diverse. But nope, they chose not to. Look where he is now. He's acceptable, and has a LOT of gameplay potential, but only if you play him correctly. Riot, do you know what he's missing? That's right, his solo lane abilities. I'm not saying return him to the state he was in pre-rework, but something similar. Below is what I personally believe will make Mordekaiser a meta pick again. Let's start with his Q. It's an okay ability, but it has better potential. I'm gonna sound insane when I say the following, but please, hear me out. If you look at the statistics, his win rate dropped off the chart when patch 5.22 hit the streets, NOT when patch 5.23 came out, which was the patch in which his Q paradigm got changed. This was because of the marksman meta becoming super OP, with a large variety of marksmen receiving new tools to help them succeed, whilst Mordekaiser received none of this attention at all. There's also the part where thy reduced the extra experience he receives in a duo lane, further decreasing his winrate. Prepare to have your mind blown; I say we bring back the original Q paradigm, where each attack did 3x the bonus damage of the last. BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING: understand the following info. It wasn't his Q paradigm change in 5.23 that made him weak (although it certainly didn't help him out); again, it was the meta change. Give this ability a shot again! It could really help him out in any position people choose to play him. Now here's where I'll get a TON of controversy. I suggest we make his Q strikes have a slight exponential slow, increasing by spell rank. The first strike would be a 2% slow, multiplying by 2 each strike, up to 8% on the 3rd hit. Each slow would also last only 1 second. At rank 5, this slow would start out at 3% on the first hit, then 9%, then 27%. This would be the only CC he had. And this would make lane trading for him a lot safer. That's what I believe his Q ability should do, let's move on to his W. This is where Riot really went south with Mordekaiser. His W is still basically useless without at least having a lane minion nearby. Come on, was being able to cast the ability alone REALLY that OP? Ever since he lost some of the initial power for the ADC pick, he's struggled a lot to perform well consistently in a solo lane, which should be just as good of an option as an ADC. I'm not at all saying his experience bonus when killing a lane minion near an ally should be removed; after all, that's what allows him to be played as an ADC in the first place. As for its overall functionality, that can remain the same as it is. But please Riot, BRING BACK SELF-CASTING A PROTECTIVE METAL CLOUD! As for his other abilities, they do just fine where they are. But let's talk about one final thing; his in-game graphics. The Mordekaiser model in itself is okay; it's his abilities. The particle effects on them are very dull compared to what they were before his rework. Sure, those effects had outdated textures, but they just needed some visual updates. His E used to have a bunch of badass maces fly out of the ground when they hit someone! Whatever happened to that! And his W just looks like a swirling cloud of smoke with some whitish-grey shards in there; please, can you make that look like an actual cloud of metallic shards? Lastly, his Q; not much to change here, but I think the lightning strike effect on the old Q looked sick; maybe try returning that to him? The lightning strikes would increase in size for each Q hit, too, which would really add to the effect. Well that wraps it up for this discussion. If a Riot employee does happen to stumble upon this board, PLEASE take my opinions/advice into consideration. Maybe spread this board to your peers or your superiors? I really want tons of people to see this board, and see if they agree. If you agree, please consider up-voting this discussion. Together, we can make Mordekaiser become a meta pick again, and stay that way. Mordekaiser has been a victim of poor execution for quite some time. It's time we fixed that, and bring him back into the meta (without being super-duper-uber-pooper-scooper-broken).
