Hextech Protobelt does not belong on the rift. Here's my thought on it.

Hextech Protobeltitem 3152 : The cost efficiency of the item, the extra burst damage it does, the short CD of the item, or even the forgiving mechanic of shooting a projectile behind you to possibly slow with a Rylai's for a get away are all pretty good. Even with all that it still feels awfully slot inefficient, which some could argue is the balance, but I say is even more reason to remove it. It comes down to either A: You're taking it because you need the dash or B: You don't need the dash and it's going to be abused on champions it was not designed for. I'm not writing this for a nerf, I'm writing this to try to remove it altogether.

1.When Hextech Protobelt was created, it was designed to give short-ranged mages (maybe some tanks) some extra mobility, particularly those without a dash. I have a problem with that premise in general. I believe if a champion NEEDS a dash to be successful, then the champion has a failed/out dated kit in general, which might point towards a rework. If the champion DOESN'T need the extra dash, then often times it would be OP to have a spare dash handy.

2.It Completely Changes the game. Besides Flash, It is the ONLY source of a dash/blink in the game that is not part of a champs kit already. Every champion would love an extra dash in their kit, dashes are powerful. Champions for which this item was not designed for can use this item to make for a less than enjoyable experience on the receiving end. It completely changes the game. It makes champions who are already reliant on keeping a considerable distance (e.g. Xerath, Vel'Koz,) EXTREMELY harder to play against an already challenging match-up (E.G. LeBlanc, Akali). It's already hard enough to survive those match-ups, one single miss-step and you are dead, add another burst and gap closer in there and it's just that much more difficult to handle. The item often give champions that rely on getting in and getting out another tool to do so that their kits were not balanced around, which once again leads back to my first point.

Also why do only AP scaling champs get an item to dash? Maybe because it would be OP or just awkward if AD scaling champs got it too, but I believe it's OP and awkward on AP scaling champs currently as well.

What do you guys think? Am I wrong? Am I on to something?

P.S. I don't know if Protobelt is used in pro play or challenger levels, there may be reasons it's not popular IF it's not popular at those tiers... but keep in mind that 73% of ranked players are Bronze 5 up to and including Gold 5. I know there is some serious room for abuse of this item at those levels.

Yeah, never liked the item. It was overpowered at first and it brought Annie into midlane again for a short while, but after the nerf it only become good option on hmm one champion (Ekko )? Having extra dash might feel good for immobile mages but the problem is that if mages don't build a specific items they do no damage and protobelt is not in that build... Everytime I built it on champions like Teemo, Lux, Soraka it still didn't help me survive assassins and using it offensively has not much point on these champs so yeah... In the end the item is only abused by champions with already good mobility to furher enhance it...

Whilst I do not necessarily disagree with this post (you make some good points), I feel I need to point something out.

or even the forgiving mechanic of shooting a projectile behind you to possibly slow with a Rylai's for a get away

Hextech Protobelt does not shoot the projectiles backwards, they only shoot forward in the same direction you're dashing.

I personally find item 3146 Hextech Gunblade's 2 second 40% slow too strong, not to mention it has really high scalling damage and a low cooldown of 40 seconds.

Mordekaiser Plz dont remove it, just rework it so it doesn't cater to assassins.

soopcan10/3/2018, 12:46:33 PM2 votes

AP Gragas builds it usually first. item 3145 synergizes wayyy too well to give it up, and i'd rather not have to sell it/buy gunblade. Also I don't think I've seen an Akali or LB build it, like, ever

The dash is overrated. I think it's very generous to even it call it a dash. It's more like a fart.

I don't I have ever seen anyone use the dash itself to any effect except ekko and Vlad. Everyone else has just been exploding into a opponents face.

Ekko and Vlad are the only ones I have seen use the item to any form of success. And Ekko is the only I have really seen be able to incorporate it into his kit and in a somewhat fluid manner.l

No one besides Ekko Annie builds it.

NuggetMilk10/4/2018, 4:26:25 AM1 votes

WAIT. HOL UP. IT SHOOTS A PROJECTILE BEHIND YOU?. I've BEEN MAINING KENNEN FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW AND I DID NOT KNOW THIS

Xeronic10/4/2018, 10:20:43 AM1 votes

Lol. Everyone is discussing the one missile left behind. When I mentioned it in the OP, my thought behind it was "Just why? The item would be fine without the extra missile in the back. Nobody would say, 'you know what this item needs, an extra missile in the back of the dash as well'. Really though, that point was supposed to be insignificant, so insignificant I probably shouldn't have mentioned it at all. One thing I didn't mention in the OP was the survivability it adds to already ridiculously mobile champions like Ekko/LB. Skillshots are hard enough to land, needing to account for even just one more dash makes landing skillshots near impossible against these champs if they still have an active up. Ekko/LB shouldn't have yet ANOTHER dash to dodge Xerath/Jhin/Ezreal abilities/ults.

As far as the best rebuttal... Noted it is more of a fart than a dash... but really it's enough.

Totally agree, the item just fails it's intendet purpose(giveing some mobillity and thus outplay potential to battle mages) as the only battlemage useing it is vlad, and mostly it gets abused by assasins for extra range and burst. The primary users are ekko, fizz, diana and eve....to a point where it feels like crippling their builtpath as they need the item to work(exept diana, i dunno why it's that popular on her) while it also feels bad to play against.

i'd prefer it beeing removed and then giveing direct buffs to the few that struggle without it.

RavenMagus10/3/2018, 12:55:22 PM1 votes

I'm not a big fan of it; the dash is fairly slow and it's not very fluid in terms of comboing into other things, unless you're Ekko I guess.

My experience with it as Annie is that the dash is just too slow and short; the extra damage is okay but if I want an item to hard engage with item 2065 does the job better.

Alzon10/3/2018, 12:57:11 PM1 votes

The best user of item 3152 is Malphite for dem uber oneshots.

Smartness Immune10/3/2018, 2:25:34 PM1 votes

Whenever i saw this item on the enemy team, i didn't find it a problem. Whenever i used it (i don't even play champions that use it that much) i didn't felt it was broken. The only time i do use it, it's when i play Mordekaiser witch can actually use all item 3152 has to offer. Other champions don't need it's burst, and the dash it's pretty small to find it even good at all. I'm only assuming that's your opinion on this item, as i never find it broken whatsoever, even on champions who build this. I find it even situational, when i can just pick item 2065 to give my entire team a burst of speed instead of doing some damage to enemies in front of me. Again, that's your opinion on this item, when the item 3146 and item 3030 are more potent than item 3152 . And Just by the math, if you hit all the rockets from item 3152 on a single champion, it will deal the same amount of damage as the other 2 - the slow unless item 3116 , on a single champion ..

Edit: Xerath Velkoz can abuse their range / potent AoE Damage to farm up, without putting themselves in danger. summoner 21 Should be your to go item in the match-up you mentioned.

CIayman10/3/2018, 4:04:00 PM1 votes

No I like it Ekko

It really helps with wave clear speed if you are playing champs like Fizz or AP Chogath or AP Gragas mid.
