New Marksman Items (a lengthy guide)

Before anything, I'm in no way a pro. I'm just a low Gold player who decided to check the new items a bit more closely.

Of course there are guides for items and I know a lot of people know already how to play around them. But there are still some people who have difficulties choosing between the variety of new items so they either end up buying the same items on the same champions every game or they constantly change their item choices and end up not utilizing them very well

Well, I've decided to put together this little guide for the new Marksman items, starting from the cheapest and work my way up.

item 1083 Cull (450 gold) +5 Attack Damage +3 Life on Hit UNIQUE Passive: Killing a minion grants 1 additional gold. Killing 100 minions grants an 300 additional bonus gold and disables this passive immediately.

Cull is a new starting item that has no upgrade options, just like Doran items set. Unlike Doran's Blade, though, this item is more oriented around a passive laning phase. This item does not grant additional HP, instead it gives flat life on hit meaning the healing doesn't get stronger with additional damage. In turn, you can survive a bit less in if those 2v2's break out on botside. the unique passive also indicates that you don't want to hear about fighting, just want to get your 400 gold with 100 minions and wait for better times. In my personal opinion, this item would work best with Vayne, early game farm machine/late game hypercary.

item 1042 **>> ** item 2015 Kircheis Shard (750 gold) +15% Attack Speed Passive: Moving and attacking will make an attack Energized UNIQUE Passive - Energized Strike: Your Energized attacks deal 30 bonus magic damage on hit.

Kircheis Shard basically has a Statikk Shiv passive without the lightning spreading to other units, (So it just hits the person you attack for extra damage) and that's only because it builds either into Statikk Shiv, or Rapid Firecannon. This item should not be bought because of it's stats, only as a last choice before you decide to upgrade it to either the Shiv ot the Firecannon.

item 1036** >> **item 3123 Executioner's Calling (800 gold) +15 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive - Executioner: Physical damage inflicts Grievous Wounds on enemy champions for 3 seconds.

Welcome back the fallen hero of Grievous Wounds. After a lot of requests from the community, Riot has decided to return the Executioner's calling from the dead with the start of the 2016 preseason. This item, as it states, applies Grievous Wounds (Which reduce their self healing effects by 40%) to any enemy champion that you've dealt physical damage to. It is a strong anti-healing people like Vladimir, Swain or Mundo. Note that this effect does not apply to heals from other champions meaning you won't do much if you buy this item against a Marksman that has a Soraka as their support.

item 1036 >> item 3034 Giant Slayer (1000 gold) +10 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive - Giant Slayer: Grants up to +10% physical damage against enemy champions with greater maximum Health than you (+1% damage per 50 Health difference, maxing at 500 Health difference)

Giant Slayer is a new, good addition to Marksmen forced to fight against a team of tanks. It's ability to deal more damage to players based on HP difference between your champion and theirs makes fighting against any kind of a tank very easy because by mid game pretty much anyone who wants to build even a Giant's belt worth of HP will be an ideal target for this item. You just have to be careful the item will pay for it's slot.

item 1036 + item 1036 **>> **item 3133 Caulfield's Hammer (1100 gold) +25 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive: +10% Cooldown Reduction

Caulfield's Hammer is a slightly weaker replacement for now removed item The Brutalizer as it does not give any armor penetration on it's own. It's good for caster Marksmen and builds into stronger AD CDR items as well as some jungle items

item 1036 + item 1036 >> item 3134 Serrated Dirk (1100 gold) +20 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive: +10 Armor Penetration UNIQUE Passive: After killing any unit, your next basic attack or singe target spell deals +15 damage.

Serrated Dirk may not be the most popular choice for Marksmen right now but some of them can benefit from the item if they utilize it well. Aside from the Armor Penetration, which is not all that great in a lane where none of the enemy champions really stack armor until later in the game (And that's only for a support...if they are a tank), Marksman does kill a lot of creeps during the early game and the do trade with enemies quite often if they didn't pick a farmbot lane. Extra 15 damage goes a long way if you can trigger it every time, especially since it doesn't have a cooldown to the passive, meaning you could kill a minion>trade>minion>trade etc. You would need either a poke support or one that can heal you after the trade for continuous trades.

item 1036 + item 1028 >> item 3052 Jaurim's Fist (1200 gold) +15 Attack Damage +150 Health UNIQUE Passive: Killing a unit grants 5 maximum Health. This bonus stacks up to 30 times.

Okay, this isn't a Marksman item by no real means. It gives too small amount of AD for the price, it gives HP which Marksmen don't really need if they're going true ADC paths. But it is a cool item to check if you're ahead and already have your 2 item spike and you think you can get away with it. It turns into Sterak's Gage, an item some carries even at Season 5 worlds have been known for buying. Not an ideal buy in almost any case but it's worth to check because it actually gives a decent amount of HP (+300) when stacked up and it's not that hard to stack it.

[REWORKED] item 1037 >> item 3035 Last Whisper (1300 gold) +25 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive: +30% Bonus Armor Penetration

This isn't a new item, just a reworked one, but it's gotten a pretty serious change so I decided to put it here with the rest. This is not the only reworked item I'll put in here but I won't cover all of them as some received minor changes, nothing game-changing. Last whisper used to be this giant Tank destroying item that ignored a bunch of enemies armor. Riot decided to change that, give LW a weaker bonus Armor Penetration passive and make it a recipe for two more Tank killing items. It's not a great laning phase item even though it's been made cheaper because enemies will never buy additional armor for you to penetrate through. It should be bought mid/late game when everyone has already firmly defined what their builds will look like and you know enemies have couple of hard tanks that wouldn't otherwise go down easy.

item 3086 + item 2015** >>** item 3094 Rapid Firecannon (2500 gold) +30% Attack Speed +30% Critical Strike Chance +8% Movement Speed Passive: Moving and attacking will make an attack_ Energized_ UNIQUE Passive - Firecannon: Your Energized attacks gain 35% bonus range (+150 range maximum) and deal 50~200 bonus magic damage (based on level) on hit. Energized attacks work on structures

Rapid Firecannon, along with Statikk Shiv and Runnan's Hurricane is the cheapest Tier 3 Marksman item, with the cost of 2500 gold total. The item is designed for Sieging more than anything else. Once your attack becomes energized, you just walk up to a turret and shoot it once to expend charge. It's best used in a scenario where most of your team are sitting in front of the enemy turret with an entire enemy team defending it. Once the minion wave approaches the turret, you make sure you're safe enough if you come closer, walk up and shoot the turret with the charged attack. The item is also good on some melee champions as the range increase is not ranged only.

item 3035 **+ **item 3034 >> item 3036 **Lord Dominik's Regards ** (2700 gold) +40 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive - Giant Slayer: Grants up to +15% physical damage against enemy champions with greater maximum Health than you (+1,5% damage per 50 Health difference, maxing at 500 Health difference). UNIQUE Passive - Last Whisper: +40% Bonus Armor Penetration

Like Giant Slayer, Lord Dominik's Regards is an item designed for dealing damage to tanks who prioritize maximum health and armor. Very good as a 3rd choice item after you get some attack speed and damage. It's best used if enemies have 2 or more tanks in their team, though. as some other items could be better at filling the item slot if this is not the case.

item 3035 + item 3123 >> item 3033 Mortal Reminder (2700 gold) +40 Attack Damage UNIQUE Passive - Executioner: Physical damage inflicts Grievous Wounds on enemy champions for 5 seconds. UNIQUE Passive - Last Whisper: +40% Bonus Armor Penetration

And unlike Lord Dominik's Regards, which prioritizes maximum health, Mortal Reminder is best used against tanky champions that have some sort of self-healing, like Vladimir, Trundle, Aatrox etc. Having grievous wounds from Executioner's Calling, this item is guaranteed to stop any tanky self healer to an end as those champions rely on self healing because it helps them be in the middle of fights without dying. Take their means of getting back HP and you've taken their tankiness. Both items work well against Mundo, but personally, I'd recommend Mortal Reminder as Mundo relies heavily on his ultimate to stay alive and wreak havoc in fights.

[REWORKED] item 1042 + item 3086 + item 1042 >> item 3046 Phantom Dancer (2700 gold) +40% Attack Speed +30% Critical Strike Chance UNIQUE Passive - Spectral Waltz: While within 500 units of an enemy champion you can see, you get +12% movement speed and you can move through units UNIQUE Passive - Lament: The last champion hit deals 12% less damage to you (ends after 10 seconds of not hitting)

Again not an entirely new item but this one has also received a rework big enough to mention. This item is now ideal for attack speed focused Marksmen who will enjoy dueling. The 12% damage reduction on you might mean that one autoattack it takes between them killing you or you killing them. Be mindful, this only works on 1 champion, so buying Phantom Dancer and Runaan's hurricane will not mean the entire enemy team might deal 12% less damage to you.

item 1053 + item 1037 + item 3133 >> item 3812 Death's Dance (3400 gold) +65 Attack Damage +10% Cooldown Reduction UNIQUE Passive: Dealing physical damage heals for 12% of the damage dealt. This is 33% as effective for Area of Effect damage. UNIQUE Passive: 12% of the damage taken is dealt as a Bleed effect over 3 seconds instead.

The reason behind putting the lifesteal on UNIQUE Passive instead of making it a stat is allowing caster Marksmen like Lucian or Varus to lifesteal better in combat, too, even with the passive only being 33% effective on Area of Effect damage. I can see how some melee AD champions could benefit from this as well (Kha'Zix, Rengar, Pantheon etc.) The other passive, turning raw damage into a bleed effect is here to delay some of the damage, giving you time to deal as much damage as you can yourself if, for instance you get caught. I think this is a pretty interesting item with a lot of potential.

[REWORKED] item 1038 + item 3133 + item 1018 >> item 3508 **Essence Reaver ** (3600 gold) +65 Attack Damage +20% Critical Strike Chance UNIQUE Passive: + 10% Cooldown Reduction UNIQUE Passive: Gain up to +20% additional Cooldown Reduction equal to your Critical Strike Chance from other sources. UNIQUE Passive: Critical strikes restore 3% of your maximum Mana Pool

When Essence Reaver came out it was a hit because of it's ability to restore mana...for a week. Then people figured out it was not as strong as they thought so they stopped buying it. Riot buffed it couple of times but with no desired effect. Now they've reworked the item, retaining the core of what item is, which is a means of damage for caster Marksmen. It having +10% cooldown reduction and giving another +20% just from an item such as Statikk Shiv, means you don't have to invest in pretty much any other CDR item apart from boots to hit your CDR cap. This item came out huge for any caster Marksman such as Ezreal or Lucian who do use spells for damage but aren't afraid to hit a minion or two to get that mana back with crit. Be mindful that you do need other sources to stack the CDR passive on this item as the +20% Crit chance it already has does not go into account.

Honorable mentions:

item 3057 Sheen (1050 gold): Now instead of giving Ability Power gives +10% CDR. Good for caster marksmen item 3085 Runaan's Hurricane (2500 gold): Less attack speed, gained Crit Chance, bolts can now crit. Good for long range marksmen. item 3087 Statikk Shiv (2500 gold): The electric current deals more damage to minions for better waveclear item 3153 **Blade of the Ruined King **(3400 gold): Nerfed so marksman would have to choose if he really wants to commit to AS item 3031 Infinity Edge (3600 gold): Nerfed slightly so marksmen would have choice between this and Essence Reaver, and not make this item an insta-buy item 3139 Mercurial Scimitar (3700 gold): Now gives lifesteal so marksman would actually have a reason to buy the item other than Quicksilver Sash avtive

This concludes my parade of talking new marksman items. If this forum post helps anyone, I'm glad, if I'm wrong at something, I'm always open to constructive criticism.
