Sona or Soraka? (help)

Hi all!

I am intending to start and play support! I wanted to try Soraka or Sona. Could anyone tell me the pros and cons of them? In what situations are they better?

Thanks!

Soraka is more of a dedicated healer than Sona. She has a very annoying silence and her W is on a 2 second cooldown at max rank. However, she doesn't do a whole lot else and her W costs her health, with the only way for her to get it back being to land her Q on people.

Sona, on the other hand, is more well-rounded. Her Q is more reliable damage and buffs both her and anyone inside the AoE's next basic attack, her W gives everyone inside the AoE a shield, her E gives its movement speed to everyone, and she has an ult that can stun an entire enemy team if they line up for it, which, combined with a Twitch or Miss Fortune ult, is going to rip the enemy team apart. Her passive is really nice, as well, and it's what really allows you to tell a good Sona from a bad Sona. Every third spell she casts, her next basic attack gets an added effect. Bonus damage from Q, lower the target's damage from W, slow from E.

Both are pretty good in the current META, with Ardent Censor being so broken right now. Sona, I would say, is better at carrying the bot lane with her damage and all-in potential with her ultimate. Soraka, on the other hand, is better at making sure nobody on your team will ever die. GREAT COSMIC HEALING with an itty-bitty cooldown. (Aladdin reference because Genie and Robin Williams are awesome).

Soraka is the best a keeping ONE person alive and her R is a powerful tool to save the ass of uncareful people, it can help you mitigates your teammates mistakes (and that's really important in SoloQ), but you can't really make pro-active plays with it. Her laning is generally super passive, even if the difference between a good Soraka and a great Soraka is that the great Soraka manages to poke and harass her opponents someewhat. Soraka is also a bit different from other Supports in that people tend to focus her a lot more than other Supports, because if they focus someone else, well, as I said, she's the best at keeping someone alive.

Sona has maybe the strongest total output of ANY Support, but it's all AoE and spread out over your whole team, so you don't really notice her contribution on any single target. You can make a bit more pro-active plays with her R than with Soraka's, but to be honest, that doesn't necessarily mean you should. Her laning is decent and flexible, she can poke a lot and zone people out in a number of match-ups where she maxes her Q, and she can also play passively by maxing her heal first if the situation calls for it. But her real strength is her late game, which is insane thanks to the passive CDR on her R at Rank 3. However, as a consequence she's much more level-dependent than other Supports, and reaching level 11 and 16 are huge power-spike.

Sona or Soraka, who cares. They both play the same role. Rush Ardents Censer asap, even before upgrading your gold item, and then just stand next to your adc and make sure he has the buff active all the time. As Sona, use your ult when anyone tries to jump your ADC.

Sona works a bit better for a very opportunistic playstyle and team engages. You can speed up your team, shield mutiple people and chain cc with your ult. That doesn't mean Soraka can't be played opportunistic but Sona is more straight forward.

Soraka has an easier time disengaging from longer range and she probably gives the strongest 2v2 if played correctly. It's really hard to beat Soraka 2v2.

Sona has better poke damage if you only care for damage but if you consider the sustain side, Soraka will always come out on top, especially in 2v2 / laning phase.

Sona is also probably most vulnerable to ganks of all supports, especially pre 6 she has almost no tools to stop enemies.

Then again most of Sonas power is in team fights where she can just mash buttons and buff up her team. Sona is actually much easier to play imo, but less specialised, she does a lot of things but isn't amazing at anything.

Both are good right now. Soraka is a little better in the early game, Sona in the late game. Both are very squishy and have limited mobility. Soraka has more raw heal power and her damage is a little more AoE while Sona is a little better in poke and AoE buffs. Both want to abuse coin and ardent censor. Soraka has a silence that makes her better against champs with channeled skills.

Basically Soraka for heals and Sona for kill steals. ;p
