Should I play ranked?

As a newish player(I played this game back in 2012 on a different account), I've been doing lots of research to see what's awaiting me when i hit 30 and start playing ranked. Now while I am not a amazing player by any means, in most of my matches i am playing with low silver to low golds and am holding my own. But, a lot of what im reading on reddit, boards, etc is telling em that regardless of how well i play, since I havent played a previous ranked season on this account, I will be sent straight to iron.

Does anyone know if this is true? I have a buddy who plays and is high Silver and I know that if I go iron I won't be able to play with him, which is kind of disappointing considering the entire reason i downloaded this game again and have put a month of my time leveling up is to play ranked with him.

TLDR: Fresh account, havent played in years, if I play ranked will i be auto-placed into Iron or do my plays actually matter?

If you JUST hit level 30 you are not going to enjoy the experience...

Avoid solo-queue as though your life depended on it, find a buddy that is good at the game if you do decide to play ranked.

Trust me when I say ranked is home to some of the most toxic players in the game, it will only be a matter of time before you run into them. Get the report button ready if things go south and try not to retaliate before, during or after the match.

I've seen a lot of toxic people as I've been leveling up. Sometimes they are funny and I get a laugh, but most of the time I just mute their chat and ping when I need assistance in jungle. I also haven't hit 30 yet, I'm sitting at 25 and am noticing the mmr fluctuating in my matches as i get closer. It seems like the system is trying to find a good elo for me, but I just want to make sure that's correct and I'm not instantly going to be iron because I'm "new"
